This Weekend



The Memorial Day Parade will depart from West Beech Street and Ohio Avenue, proceed through the West End to New York, turn north to Park Avenue, then east to City Hall. The parade will start at 9:30 a.m. and will have World War II veterans of the barrier island as Grand Marshals.

Continue your education take a class at the Long Beach Adult Learning Center at 75 East Walnut St. in Long Beach. The center offers classes in basic education, English as a second language, citizenship preparation, pronunciation and accent reduction, English at home and computer ed. The center offers both day and evening classes and is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Monday to Wednesday in the evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For more info call 897-2233.

Jimmy Moore Solo will play American standards, such as "Stardust," "Night and Day," and "Mack the Knife." At the library on Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m.

The art of Tamara de Lempicka, "Art Deco Painter," and "Icon of the Jazz Age," is a mixture of sculptural hyperrealism and classic painting. Louis Cella Caruso, lecturer, says that Tamara achieved simplicity and a startling contrast of tone and haunting shadows. See this exciting presentation on the 20th Century portrait painter on Tuesday, June 1 at 2 p.m.

Gene Kelly: An American Dancer will be shown on Saturday, June 5 at 2 p.m. Video clips from some of Kelly's most famous performances will be shown, along with interviews co-starts like Debbie Reynolds and Cyd Charisse. Jack Schnur will perform songs associated with Gene and will dance as well.

Safe Sitter Program, offered by LBMC, takes place on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It is a one-day seminar for youths age 11 to 13, designed to teach the basics of childcare and safety. Nightwatch The Nightwatch Hotline in Long Beach offers crisis counseling and referral to callers from all over the area, free of charge. Hotline hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6-11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Call 889-2332.

Diabetes Club meets the third Monday each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at LBMC. Topics include nutritional management, medications, eye and foot care, exercise and more.

Nar-Anon is for anyone who has known a feeling of desperation concerning the drug addiction problem of someone near to them. Meetings every Thursday at 7:45 p.m. at the Island Park United Methodist Church, 364 Long Beach Road., Island Park, across from the Post Office.

Anxiety and Depression screenings are offered for free at LBMC's Counseling Center. Wednesdays from 2 to 3 p.m. Includes an interview with a mental health professional. Pre-registration not required. Call 897-1270.

Bereavement Support On Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Conference Room C at Long Beach Medical Center. The Medical Center's Counseling Center will offer a weekly bereavement support group for individuals dealing with the death of a family member or loved one. Senior Spotlight



Beginners meditation is held on Wednesdays, 2-3 p.m. at the Long Beach Senior/Community Center with Lisa Wisel. Wisel also conducts Dance/Movement Therapy on Wednesdays and Fridays 1-2 p.m. Call 431-3510 for more info.

P.A.C.E. Members of the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC, Long Beach Division 310 National Blvd., Long Beach enjoy the benefits of music and dance through our P.A.C.E program. P.A.C.E, People with Arthritis Can Dance, helps those with arthritis enjoy movement and hopefully helps to alleviate some of the stiffness that comes with arthritis. Lisa Wisel, MS, ADTR, CLM, a registered Dance/Movement therapist, leads the class. The class meets every Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Fitness for older adults is every Friday at 9:05 a.m. at the Long Beach Public Library. Magda Rosenberg, exercise physiologist, conducts a series of physical fitness routines. Please check with your doctor before participating in this or any exercise program.
