AARP. The Bellmore-Merrick Chapter of AARP, the only Nassau County chapter that meets at night, holds its meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Mepham High School cafeteria located on Camp Avenue one block west of Newbridge Road, Bellmore. Torah for tots. Temple Beth Am Sisterhood. The program runs two to three Saturdays per month from September through May.
Women's dinner. The Long Island Chapter of the American Business Women's Association will hold its chapter dinner at Bedell's at West Wind in Freeport on Wednesday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $18. Guests welcome. For reservations call (516) 623-0461.

Beginners' Knitting. Learn the basics of knitting on Thursdays, May 15, May 22 and May 29 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The project to be completed will be a vest or baby blanket. Bring a pair of knitting needles and some worsted weight yarn to the first session. Please bring a pencil and pad to take notes. The series of three classes cots $15 (no refunds). Book Discussion group. The Library's Book Discussion Group will meet on Monday, may 19 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. to discuss "Snow Falling on Cedars" by David Guterson. Set in the Pacific Northwest, this novel deals with Japanese internment during WWII. Japanese American Kabuo Miyomoto is arrested for the murder of a fellow fisherman. His trial provides a focal point to the novel and stirs memories of past events. The story combines a murder mystery, a love story and a painful history lesson.
Art of happiness. What do people really want out of life? Money, fame, personal achievement? James Ryan, M.S., believes that what we really want is a life that has a purpose and a life full of happiness. On Monday,May 19, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., Ryan will show you how to be happy more often. Come learn how to incorporate valuable fundamental concepts into our daily lives.
Lil' Playmates. Children, ages 18-29 months and caregiver may register for this program on Thursdays, May 15, 22, 29, June 12, 19 at 9:45 a.m. or 11 a.m. Sessions include free play, a story, and craft. It's also an opportunity for moms to meet other moms. Registration began May 8 in the community room. Proof of age required. Call (516)785-6260.
Dubs & the Jazz Connection. On Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m., Joe Dubs returns with the Jazz Connection. Five piece band and singer Carolyn Harding play jazz classics and popular songs from the thirties, forties, and fifties.

Education and support groups for men with prostate cancer are being announced by Nassau University Medical Center. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of every month. For more information, contact Doug Jorif at (516) 572-4912.
Substance help. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Alanon meetings held Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Infertility group. The National Infertility Network Exchange is now forming peer-led support groups. Topics include coping with infertility, medical procedures, male infertility, in-vitro fertilization, miscarriage, secondary infertility, unexplained adoption and a child-free lifestyle.
