School board meetings
The Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education meets on Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. at Sewanhaka High School.
The Elmont School District Board of Education meets on Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. at Elmont Road.
The Franklin Square School District Board of Education meets on Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. at Washington Street School.

The Elmont Library Board of Trustees meet every last Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at the library, 700 Hempstead Tpke.,

The Franklin Square Public Library Board meets on Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. in the library. The library is at 19 Lincoln

The Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce will meet on Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m. for its annual Installation Dinner,

The Franklin Square Kiwanis will meet on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. for a general meeting. Everyone interested in
hearing from Tom Dolan, superintendent of schools, is encouraged to attend.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program to help individuals and families recover from the ravages of substance abuse is
available at the Chemical Dependence Treatment Services of Peninsula Counseling
Center. Group and individual therapy sessions, adult and adolescent treatment
are available at Peninsula’s Valley Stream location, 73 S. Central Ave. Contact Trici Baylis, LMSW

Eating Disorders Program of Peninsula Counseling Center is forming new groups for bulimia and compulsive
over-eating. Individual, group and family therapy are also available for
treatment of anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder and compulsive
over-eating. Julie Livingston, LCSW, conducts the program at 381 Sunrise

Teen Girls’ Socialization Groups that help build self-confidence, enhance social skills and improve academic
performance are offered by Peninsula Counseling Center, 124 Franklin Place,
Woodmere. Girls ages 14-15 are led by Kathy Schmitt, LMSW. Girls ages 16-18 are

Recovery, Inc. is a group focusing on mental health. It meets every Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at

Chair Excercise Class Join us Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. for chair exercise class, led by volunteer
instructors Isabel Batson, Juana Thornhill and Millie Danko. Coffee served.
Chi Gong Class Join us Jan. 10 & Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. for an ancient Chinese system of exercies or movements
performed in mediation, which promotes relaxation and inner peace. The class,
taught by Cathy Anastasio, consists of easy breathing and movement exercies,
which anyone can do, no matter what their age.
Senior Step Dancing Join us Jan. 11 & 25 at 10 a.m. for “Senior Step & Style Dancing” led by volunteer instructors Juana Thornhill, Isabel Baston and Millie Danko.

Eastern Promises Join us Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. for a film that is generating a lot of Oscar buzz.
Eastern Promises follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen),
who is tied to one of London’s most notorious organized crime families. Also starring Naomi Watts as Anna, an
innocent midwife trying to write a wrong. This film is rated R.
Pay Less Taxes Join us Jan. 11 at 12:30 p.m. for a seminar with Barry Lisak, an IRS enrolled
agent. Seminar will provide over 150 tax-saving strategies to help reduce one’s federal and NYS taxes. Topics will include education, retirement, home
ownership, charitable, medical, investment, employee deductions and misc.
categories. This session will also include questions and answers.
Home Safety Join us Jan. 18 at 12:30 p.m. for law enforcement expert Isham Latimer. WIth
crimes like home invasions on the rise, it would seem that the current breed of
criminal has become so bold that we all feel vulnerable even within our homes.
Instead of living in fear, arm yourself with knowledge! Latimer brings his
expertise and experience in dealing with criminals. Learn how to become more
alert to your surroundings.
Computers for Adults Join us Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. In this workshop you will learn how to work with
numbers including imputing, inserting, moving, erasing and simple mathematical
operations. Included will be an introduction to spreadsheets providing an
understanding of basic techniques, formulas and working with columns and rows,
formatting and spreadsheet design. For Elmont Library Card holders only.
Poetry Writing Workshop Join us Jan. 16 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Dr. Opyr is the author of five collections
of poetry that have been published in numerous journals and magazines.
Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to write poetry and
share what they’ve written. Bring paper and pen and the desire to expand your knowledge and
enjoyment of writing.
Remembering Martin Join us Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. for the showing of “In Remembrance of Martin” in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday. This movie reminds us how much we can be and do, both as individuals
and people together.
