The Malverne Historical and Preservation Society will host a classic Movie Night on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m at the Joseph L. Landers Restoration House, 369 Ocean Avenue in Malverne. “The Women” directed by George Cukor, and starring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell will be the movie for the evening. Get Ready to Read on Friday, Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This initiative is for children who will be in kindergarten in the 2008-2009 school year. Visit the “stations” between these hours.
Musical Concert featuring selections from Linda Ipanema and Company from their new show, “The Other Side of the Fifties” will be on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.
Come and learn how to play Sudoku on Monday, Jan. 14 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the library’s community room. The class continues on Thursday, Jan. 17. Registration has begun.  
Pajama Storytime will be on Monday, Jan. 14 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. in the Children’s Room. Children ages 3 to 5 can join the library for PJ Storytime. Participants will also enjoy stories, songs and a craft. Bring your teddy bear, a grownup and wear pajamas. Registration has begun.
Learn to Knit and Crochet on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The cost is $1 each class and the classes  will be inside of the community room at the library. Registration has begun.
Parenting and Playtime will be on Thursday, Jan. 17 from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. This will be an informal workshop for a parent or caregiver and a child who is 1 to 3-years-old. The Graphic Novel Club for young adults will meet on Thursday, Jan. 17 from 7 to 8 p.m. Come and hear about the Anime Festival recently held in New York City. Participants can also talk about all of the graphic novel favorites that they have read. Registration has begun.

Learn about healthy eating on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 7 to 8:25 p.m. Join the Cornell Cooperative for a program on healthy eating. This program is for parents or those who care for children. The presentation will teach attendees to select healthier foods, snacks, and beverages for children. Registration has begun.
Digital Photo Class will be on Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. If you have a digital camera and know how to take pictures, but want to learn how to move the images from your camera to the computer? In this class you will learn the answers to this question and much more. The library will cover using an image editing program that allows you to resize, crop, adjust light levels, and more. Participants will also learn how to organize, name and save their pictures. As prerequisites: participants should have completed Computer Kindergarten for Grownups, Computer 1st Grade for Grownups and Computer 4th Grade for Grownups or have equivalent knowledge prior to taking this course. There is a $5 fee due at sign-up. Registration has begun.

Come and watch independent film “Dreams of Dust” on Friday, Jan. 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. Synopsis: Mocktar, a Nigerian peasant, comes looking for work in Essakane, a dusty gold mine in Northeast Burkina Faso, Africa, where he hopes to forget the past that haunts him. In Essakane, he quickly finds out, the gold rush ended twenty years before, and the inhabitants of this wasteland and strange timelessness manage to exist simply from force of habit. The beautiful Coloumba, however, is still courageously struggling to raise her daughter after the death of her family. Mocktar will soon be fighting not only to survive, but also to provide a better future for this mother and her child. The movie is in French with English subtitles and the running time is 86 minutes.
Yoga for Kids in grades 1 through 5 will be on Monday, Jan. 28 from 5 to 5:45 p.m. The cost is $60 per child and it must be paid by check at the time of registration. Manga Drawing Workshop for Teens will be on Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Teens can come and learn how to draw their own manga masterpieces with the help of David O. Miller, a former art director for  U.S. Space Camp. Miller is well-known for his science fiction and fantasy illustrations. All teens are encouraged to bring their favorite pencil.
