Movies at Village Hall features three upcoming selections. On Friday, Jan. 11, “The Simpsons Movie” will be shown. “Ratatouille” follows on Friday, Jan. 25 and “Mr. Magorium’s Wonderful Emporium” on Friday, Feb. 8. All movies will be shown in the Village Hall court room at 7
p.m. Tickets are available free of charge at the A.J. Hendrickson Park
administration building the week prior to the showing. Movies are for residents

The library will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It will reopen

Young Adult Winter Crafts Night is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 25 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Students will make holiday
decorations and gifts. Registration is required.
Open House will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. Magician Terry Parrett will
be entertaining children and parents with on-going magic shows in the children’s room. Andrea Colletti from Fun4UFaces will be doing face painting and there
will be craft tables for the children. In the Adult Room, the Valley Stream
Book Club will have a table to talk to prospective members and Valley Stream
author Thomas McShane will be available to speak about his book, “Stolen Masterpiece Tracker.” A book sale of almost new books will be held and free calendar magnets will be
distributed while the supply lasts.
Young Adult Video Games Night will be held on Friday, Feb. 1, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Teens will play Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, Wii Bowling and more.

Children’s Room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for January 2007 with children’s librarian Jaclyn Kunz. “Ms. K” will be offering Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other

for all programs, with first preference given to Valley Stream library
cardholders.
Adult Volunteers are needed to deliver books to its homebound patrons. Approximately 20 homebound readers receive book deliveries each month with the
assistance of adult volunteers. The library is looking for someone to take over
the route of G. Warren Wheeler III, who passed away this month. If you can
spare a morning or afternoon once week, contact Library Director Ms. Eng or
Homebound Service Coordinator Ms. Sau.

Tax Save Program will be held on Friday, Jan. 11 at 12:30 p.m. with IRS-enrolled tax agent Barry
Lisak. This seminar will provide more than 150 tax-saving strategies to help
reduce one’s federal and state taxes. Topics will include education, retirement, home
ownership, charitable, medical, investment, employee deductions and
miscellaneous categories. This session will also include a question and answer
session.
Senior Step and Style Dancing will be held on Fridays, Jan. 11 and 25, at 10 a.m. The program will be led by
RSVP volunteer instructors Juana Thornhill, Isabel Batson and Millie Danko. Coffee served.
Computer Second Grade is a program for adults on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. In this workshop you
will learn how to work with numbers including imputing, inserting, moving,
erasing and simple mathematical operations. Included will be an introduction to
spreadsheets providing an understanding of basic techniques, formulas and
working with columns and rows, formatting and spreadsheet design.
Business Workshop will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The title of the event is “How to Become a Certified Minority/Women Business Enterprise.” The presenter will be Scott Munson, an associate certification analyst. This
workshop will be presented by the Nassau County Office of Minority Affairs and
Legislator John Ciotti in partnership with Empire State Development. To reserve

Family Pre-School Hour will be held on Monday, Jan. 14 at 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. for children
age 18 months through 5 years. Enjoy a special one-hour program of singing,
dancing, and storytelling then bring home a craft. The theme for this program is “Snowman.”
Tuesday Feature Films continue on Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. with “Eastern Promises.” The film follows the mysterious and ruthless Nikolai, who is tied to one of
London’s most notorious organized crime families. This movie is rated R. Upcoming
selections for the month include “The Kingdom” on Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. (R) and “The Bourne Ultimatum” on Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. (PG-13).
Picture This will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. Children in grades 3-6 will paint
their own picture frame. All necessary materials will be provided.
Chair Exercise Class will be held on Friday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. The class is led by RSVP volunteer
instructors Isabel Batson, Juana Thornhill and a Millie Danko. Coffee will be
served.
Registration Begins on Friday, Jan. 18 for Parent/Infant Play and Movement Program. This three-week
program takes place on Fridays, Feb. 1, 8 and 15 at 10 a.m. for newborns
through 1-year-olds and their parent or caregiver.
Senior Connections meets on Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This is a program of seniors helping seniors with daily matters such as health
care, Social Security and more. Retired teacher and an AARP board member Ethel Baenisch leads the discussion.
District 13 Board of Education will hold its next committee meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 8
p.m. in the district board room. The next regular business meeting will be held
on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. at the James A. Dever School.
District 24 Board of Education will hold a work session will on Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7:30
p.m. followed by a regular business meeting at 8:30 p.m.
District 30 Board of Education will hold its next committee meeting on Monday, Jan. 14 at 8
p.m. in district conference at 175 N. Central Ave. The next regular business
meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Shaw Avenue School
library.
Parent Forums will be held in District 30 this month. Hear a State of the Schools presentation
from district administrators and stay for a question and answer session. Clear
Stream Avenue School will host a forum on Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. and
Forest Road will host a forum on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Supermarket Sweeps will be hosted buy the South High School PTSA on Friday, Feb. 8. Doors open at

Kindergarten registration in District 24 will take place next month. Any parent or guardian who has a
child turning 5 years old prior to Dec. 1, 2008, should contact their home

Cancer Support Group at Franklin Hospital meets the first Monday of every month and is open to all
