Even at 11 years old, there was no hint of hesitation or waver in John Byrne’s voice as he spoke to the gathered residents and trustees at the March 26 Island Park Board of Education meeting.
Perhaps it was a sense of perspective that fueled John’s effective recounting of his community achievements through fundraising drives and beautification projects.
John has cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of tens of thousands of children and adults throughout the world. According to the United States National Library of Medicine, cystic fibrosis is passed down genetically and causes thick, sticky mucous to build up in the lungs, digestive tract and other areas of the body.
“John was diagnosed later in life. We had suspected it, but prior to that, he had been in the hospital all the time,” said Tara Byrne, John’s mother. “He’s on a medication regiment every day. He wouldn’t be able to breathe if he stopped taking the medication.”
As a member of the Island Park Lincoln Orens Middle School Student Council and the Builders Club (the middle school version of the charitable Kiwanis Club), John has selflessly participated in a number of civic activities designed to improve the community.
In the past few months, John has spoken at meetings for the Board of Education, the Island Park Civic Association and the Island Park Kiwanis Club.
John’s current fundraising goal is much closer to his heart. John is organizing his own team — Team John Byrne — for the annual Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides Walk, with the goal of raising $2,500.
“I’ve always wanted to do it, this year we just happened to actually do it,” John said. “I have more understanding now that I’m older. I feel very excited that I’m helping other people that have it a lot worse than I do.”
As of April 11, John had convinced 25 people to join his team for the walk and raised more than $1,400 toward his goal. The outpouring of support that John has received has left a lasting impression.
