Baldwin Union Free School District holds a regularly scheduled monthly meeting, usually on the second Wednesday of each month. Meetings are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. The January 12 meeting will be held at the Brookside School, 940 East Stanton Avenue; the February 16 meeting will be held at the Plaza School on Seaman Avenue.
Baldwin Public Library board meetings are generally held every third Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the library, located at 2385 Grand Avenue. For more information, call the Librarian-in-Charge: Catherine Overton at 223-6228.
Fire District meetings are held at the Baldwin Fire District Headquarters, located at 2386 Grand Avenue, on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.
Sanitary District No. 2 monthly meetings are held at the offices of the district, located at 2080 Grand Avenue, on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m.
Kiwanis Club meetings are held weekly at the Coral House, located at 70 Milburn Avenue, on Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

So. Hempstead Civic Association
meets every second Wednesday of the month at the So. Hempstead Fire Dept., 555 May Street, at 8 p.m. The January 2005 meeting will include the installation of new executive board members and a speaker on increasing property taxes. For more info, call 236-8211. All are welcome.

Book reviewers club. During the month of January, the library is offering children in grades 1-6 the opportunity to join the book reviewers club. Participants will read the designated book for their grade level and receive a prize when they turn in their review or drawing. Turn in reports by Monday, January 31. forms are available at the children's reference desk.
Parent/child workshop. For one- and two-year olds and a parent or caregiver. Professionals (i.e.: nutritionist, speech pathologist, child development, etc.) meet with parents providing input, playtime and more. Birth certificate required at registration. Sessions held on Wednesdays at 9:45 a.m. until February 2.
Book babies. For 9- to 15-month olds and a parent or caregiver. Birth certificate required at registration. Sessions will be 20 minutes in length, will feature simple stories, nursery rhymes and movement activities and held on Thursdays at 11 a.m. on Jan., 13, 20 &27 and Feb. 3.
Mother Goose. For 16- to 23-month-olds and a parent or caregiver. Registration is necessary. Sessions will feature simple stories, nursery rhymes, songs and fingerplays. Sessions will be held on Thursdays at 11 a.m. on January 13, 20 & 27 and February 3.
Saturday toddler story times. For two-year-olds and a parent or caregiver. Sessions will be 30 minutes in length and feature stories, crafts, songs and fingerplays. Registration is necessary. Sessions will be held at 10:30 a.m. on January 15, 22 &29 and February 5 & 12.
Winter pre-school story times for ages three and four. Meetings, which are held weekly for half an hour, consist of stories, songs and more. Registration is required. Choice of sessions on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Sessions end on February 15.

Improve English conversational skills by enrolling in a new program to help native Spanish speaking individuals sponsored by the library. This program will consist of six weekly sessions, each lasting an hour and a half. Along with practicing conversation in a comfortable environment, the library hopes to promote friendship and an understanding of different cultures. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Wednesday, Jan. 12, the film, "In Remembrance of Martin," will be shown at 4:30 p.m. This documentary includes interviews with Dr. King's family, friends, classmates and advisors. A celebration will be held on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 2 p.m. Dr. King will be remembered in a program presented by residents.
Property assessment lecture. A representative of the Nassau County Assessment Review Commission will discuss property assessment, grievance procedures and star exemptions on Thursday, Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
Lunch and travel series. Irma and Bob Mandel will present "A Sense of Africa," exploring So. Africa's unspoiled natural beauty and bustling modern cities on Friday, Jan. 14 at noon. Bring a brown bag lunch and a friend. Beverage and dessert will be provided.
Video/lecture series. "From Yao to Mao: 5,000 Years of Chinese History," will be presented by Robert Sweeney on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 2:30 p.m. This comprehensive video course will explore the history of the most populous nation on earth. The first lecture will include China's geography and archaeology, a discussion of the first dynasties and the Zhou conquest.
Religious services/events
So. Baldwin Jewish Center, 2959 Grand Avenue in Baldwin, will host scholar and author Emily Taitz, on a discussion entitled, "350 Years of American Jewish Women," on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 9:30 a.m. The men's club will be holding its annual Jewish National Fund breakfast on Sunday, Jan. 23 at 9:30 a.m. Both events require reservations. South Nassau Christian Women's Club will hold a luncheon on Friday, Jan. 28 at 11:30 a.m. at the Coral House on Miburn Avenue in Baldwin. Lana Noon, nationally acclaimed speaker and author, will share her involvement in the vietnam "operation baby lift" and her life as a global mom.
