Adult Classes. The Adult Education Committee of the Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, in cooperation with Congregation Beth Israel of Hempstead, offers a free adult education class. "German Jewry-Architects of American Jewish Life" on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at Congregation Beth Israel, 141 Hilton Ave., Hempstead. Rabbi Art Vernon of the JCC of West Hempstead is the instructor.

Government meetings. The Hempstead Town Board is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan Bennett Pavilion, One Washington St., Hempstead. The Malverne Architectural Review Board meets Wednesday, Jan. 20 in the Malverne Public Library, 61 St. Thomas Pl. The Malverne Village Board of Trustees meet Wednesday, Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Malverne Public Library.

Congregation Beth Israel, 141 Hilton Avenue in Hempstead, holds Friday night services on the third Friday of each month at 7:45 p.m. Services are followed by a program/speaker and Oneg Shabbat. Weekly Saturday services are held at 9 a.m. and followed by Kiddish and discussion. For further information regarding services, please call the Temple at 794-0352 or 594-1393.. The Temple thrift shop is open every Tuesday, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Class Reunion. A 30th reunion is planned for the Valley Stream High School Class of 1975. A dinner cruise leaving from Freeport is scheduled for August 13, 2005. For more information contact Gail Beyer at 593-0459 or DFAITHFULL@Yahoo.com.

Neighborhood Watch. Malverne Neighborhood Watch meets every third Wednesday of the month at the Malverne Public Library. For more information, call Joe Lanzetta, president, at 599-2343.

West Hempstead JCC. The Jewish Community Center of West Hempstead, 711 Dogwood Avenue, holds daily Minyan services, Mondays through Thursdays at 6:40 a.m.and 8 p.m.; on Fridays at 6:40 a.m. and candle lighting; and on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Malverne Jewish Center. 1 Norwood Ave. Friday night services are held on the last Friday of each month. Collation and discussion immediately follow services. Rashi's commentary on Deuteronomy Shabbat afternoons, ongoing. Torah reading/cantillation Sunday mornings, following Minyan. Call 593-6364 for reservations and information.

Malverne Youth Board. On Friday, Jan. 7, a luxury bus will leave Village Hall, 99 Church St., at 5:15 p.m. for Medieval Times in Lyndhurst, NJ, for a four-course knightly meal and a jousting show. The cost is $35 per person for the bus and the show. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Payment is due at sign-up.

The youth board also has tickets for the Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, matinee for the Broadway show "Wicked." The $50 cost includes a ticket and school bus transportation. The bus leaves Village Hall 12:30 p.m. and return at about 7 p.m. If ticket requests exceed the number of tickets purchased, there will be a lottery. This event is not first come, first serve. Sign-up ends on Jan. 14.Limit of 4 tickets per family.

Thrift Shop. Malverne Community Presbyterian Church's thrift shop is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the church hall on Nottingham Road.

Malverne Homemakers meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. at the Malverne Community Presbyterian Church on Nottingham Road.

Beginner Mah Jongg. Here is your opportunity to learn a game that began in China more than 4,000 years ago. It has become a mainstay in the U.S. since the early 1920's. As you learn, you will have fun and make new friends. Join instructor Julie Feeley and enjoy an exciting and challenging game. The National Mah Jongg League, Inc. rules are followed. The $20 fee includes a Mah Jongg card.

Fall/Winter hours. The Library will be open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m., on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Film Screening.. The Malverne Public Library presents a screening of the independent film Witnesses on Wednesday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Set amid the atrocities of war in the Balkans, Witnesses is retold from various characters' viewpoints, adding new information about the complexity of war and humanity. The film is in Croatian with English subtitles. Registration begins Jan. 18.

A.A.R.P. Defensive Driving. The Malverne Public Library offers an A.A.R.P./ 55 Alive defensive driving program on Tuesday, Feb 22 and Thursday, Feb. 24 from noon to 4 p.m. The program is open to people ages 50 and over. There is a $10 fee which must be paid by check (cash is not accepted) at the time of registration. There is in-person registration only. If you cannot register yourself, a spouse or neighbor can register for you. You must bring your driver's license and a writing utensil to the two sessions. The program is open to Malverne library cardholders first on a first come, first serve basis. Registration begins Saturday, Feb. 12. If there is space available, non-cardholders may register on Saturday. Feb. 19.

Toddlertime. "A Time for Kids" presents Toddlertime, an interactive program for children 18 months to 36 months. This program features movement, crafts, storytime and musical interaction. Parents or guardians must be present. The Malverne Public Library offers either a 10:15 a.m.-11 a.m. session Or 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m. session. Meeting dates are on Mondays: Feb. 7, 14, 28, March 7, 14, and 21. Registration begins Jan. 12. Fee is $24 by cash or check.

The Virtues of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Workshop. An afternoon to celebrate the birthday of one of America's greatest heroes. Artist/ designer Madona Cole-Lacy comes to Lakeview Saturday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m. to exhibit her one-of-a-kind art crafted from nature. Craft session will follow. Registration required with $1 materials fee.

Safe Boating Course. Rosanne DiSimone, licensed U.S. Coast Guard Master Captain, presents part one of his two part course on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. Registration is $35 and must be paid by Friday, Jan. 14.

GED seminar. The New Horizons program for adults and out-of-school youth sponsors a seminar in the library on Monday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. Programs such as High School Equivalency (GED), Adult Basic Education, External High School Diploma, English as a Second Language and Computer Literacy will be discussed. Registration is required before Wednesday, Jan. 19.

Early Childhood Room will be available to all Lakeview children between the ages of one and five Fridays Jan. 21 and 28 and Feb. 4 and 11, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Day care centers welcome. Registration is required and sign-up has already begun. Call 536-3071 for more information.
