Book fair. The McVey PTA is hosting its annual book fair on Dec. 1 through 5. Hours are 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Dec. 1, 3, 4 and 5. Holiday lightings. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce is to hold its tree and menorah lighting on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. inside the town square. The town square is at the corner of East Meadow and Prospect avenues. The Community Association of Stewart Avenue is to hold its holiday lighting on Friday, Dec. 12 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. next to the Carvel at 801 Carman Ave.
Annual bazaar. The Community Reform Temple, 712 The Plain Road, is to hold its annual bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 6 and Sunday, Dec. 7. Call (516)333-1839 for more information.

AARP meeting. The Uniondale-East Meadow AARP Chapter #5228 is to hold its next meeting on Tuesday,Dec. 9 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 311 Uniondale Ave. in Uniondale. There will be a musical presentation by the Smith Street School's orchestra, dance troupe and chorus.
NINE meeting. The National Infertility Network Exchange in East Meadow is to hold its monthly educational meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Samuel Field YM-YWHA, 58-20 Little Neck Parkway, Queens. Holiday party. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce is to hold its holiday party on Dec. 14 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 2686 Hempstead Turnpike, the club formerly known as Luxe.
Calling volunteers. The A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility is looking for volunteers for a few hours each week to benefit the patients, residents and visitors. A Holly Patterson is a 889-bed skilled nursing facility in Uniondale. Volunteer positions available include meal monitoring, transporting residents, assisting in recreational activities, office support services and friendly visitation to patients and residents. Call

Library Events
The lost tribe. Former Israeli Ambassador to Ethiopia, Asher Naim, will lead a discussion on the rescue and redemption of the Ethiopian Jews on Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. In 1991 Ethiopia was caught in the misery of a deadly drought and a debilitating dictatorship. It was in this atmosphere that Naim worked tirelessly to airlift nearly 14,000 Ethiopian Jews to Israel. He is the author of the book "Saving the Lost Tibe: The Rescue and Redemption of the Ethiopian Jews," which chronicles his efforts.
Support Groups
Alzheimer's support. The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an Alzheimer's disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at (516) 918-4009 to register.
Substance help. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Alanon meetings held Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore.All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Education and support groups for men with prostate cancer are being held at Nassau University Medical Center. Meetings are the first Wednesday of the month.
Mothers helping mothers. The Sunrise Mother's Center, a non-profit, non-sectarian, member-run organization of mothers helping mothers. The center is a place for mothers to meet and develop new or existing skills. Discussion groups, committee work and special events, as well as a Time for Two program for children ages 12 months to 3 years old and their caregivers are also available.
