WHCA meeting Get the scoop on the property tax reassessment from the Chair of the County's Board of Assessors, Charles O'Shea. Find out about the water you drink, bathe the baby in, and clean your clothes with, as we hear from officials of the WH Water District. Meet the new members of the Civic Association's Executive Board, and say 'thank you' to those who are departing. Step right up to the 'open mike,' and have your say on what's good, what's bad, and what could be better in our town.All of this, and more, at the West Hempstead Civic Association's Annual Meeting, Thursday, June 20, at 7:30 PM, in the auditorium of the West Hempstead High School. Be there, and be a part of your community.

Golf Outing will be hosted by the Hempstead/Franklin Square Elks Lodge on June 17 at the Holbrook Country Club, with tee offs beginning at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public. The cost is $125 per person. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. It also includes a hot dog and beverage (beer/soda) after the ninth hole and a complete dinner and cocktail hour with other festivities in the clubhouse after golfing is completed. Advance reservations required and full payment must be submitted by June 7. Limited to 100 golfers and reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Strawberry Fields The Rosary Altar Society of St. Catherine of Sienna Church, 33 New Hyde Park Road, Franklin Square, is sponsoring a "Strawberry Festival" card party on Thursday, June 13 a noon in the Peter Meyer Room. Admission is $3, which includes strawberries, coffee and cake. Call 775-4008 for more.

League Lunch The League of Women Voters of the Greater Five Towns will hold their annual membership lunch on Tuesday, June 11 at noon at the Big Apple Buffet in Green Acres Mall, Valley Stream. Leg. Dir. of the NY State League Barbara Bartoletti will speak. Reservations at 887-9094.

Spring Pancakes On Sunday, June 9, the Franklin Square Lions Club will be flippin' the food at their Spring Pancake Breakfast, at St. James the Just Church, 858 Roosevelt St., FS. Admission is $5 adults, $2.50 for kids. Raffles will be held!

Safety Drive St. James the Just Church, 858 Roosevelt St., Franklin Square, will sponsor a safety defensive driving course on Saturday, June 8 from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. For all ages. Fee: $35 for materials, course, and a snack. Benefits: 3 years of 10% off insurance and 4 points off your violations. Info: Cathy at 354-2316.

Book Sale The Friends of the Floral Park Library will hold their giant Annual Book Sale on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. rain or shine. A petting zoo, complete with 18 animals, will be held the same day for the kids from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. $2 a-bag-of-books sale will also be held on Monday, June 10, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. It's all happening at the library on the corner of Tulip Avenue and Caroline Place across from the LIRR station. Father's Day Crafts Make something special for that special man in your life! Join us on Saturday, June 15; children ages 3 - K with an adult at 11 a.m., children in grades 1 - 4 at 2 p.m. Registration begins on Saturday, June 1, for residents, June 8, for non-residents. Alden Manor Branch will be hosting their own craft on Saturday, June 8 at 2 p.m. for K - 6. Registration begins on May 25 for residents, June 1 for non-residents.

Morning Movie Matinee Join us on Friday, June 7, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. for our movie matinee featuring that lovable puppy Spot. All ages are welcome and no registration is necessary.

Reading Partners This is our most popular program for 7th-9th graders during the summer. Each Tuesday the 7th- 9th graders read to the little ones (3-7 years old) for an one-hour program and then watch an one hour movie with them. In order to be a Reading Partner the 7th- 9th graders must come to a Reading Partners Orientation. These will be held on Monday, June 24 at 2 p.m. or Tuesday, June 25 at 10 a.m. Registration for these sessions begins Monday, June 10. If you do not attend one of these sessions you can not be a Reading Partner.

Writer's Group The Writer's Group under the direction of Denise Brosokas meets in the library on the third Tuesday of every month to share ideas and offer support and guidance. Join the group Tuesday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m. and share your writing.

Friday Feature Film Join us on Friday, June 21 at 2 p.m. for a showing of America's Sweethearts, a movie set in the midst of a nasty public breakup of a movie star couple. A studio publicist scrambles to put a cap on the escalating situation as the couple's latest film has found its only print kidnapped by the director. Starring John Cusack, Julia Roberts, Catharine Zeta-Jones, and Billy Crystal. 102 minutes. Rated PG.

Book Discussion Join us on Monday, June 24 at 2:00 p.m. for a discussion of The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama led by Janis Schoen. Coffee and cookies will be served.

Decoupage Plates Join us on Saturday, June 29 at 2:00 p.m. for Decoupage Plates with Estelle Cohen, an adult craft program. Create and take away a beautiful decoupage plate. Learn the technique and you can apply it to different types of plates, bowls and vases. You can either display the plate in your home or use it as a gift for someone special. Registration necessary and begins Saturday, June 15 for Elmont library patrons and Saturday, June 22 for non-residents.

Serving platter Have you ever done decoupage? It is fun and creative. Reverse collage is even more fun, with results that will amaze you. Join us Tuesday, June 18 at 7:00 p.m. when craftsperson, Julie Gaudioso will teach how to create a unique platter to display your culinary delights, decorate a wall or give as a gift. Using paint, a choice of patterned papers and a bit of imagination, you too can produce a Picasso! There is a materials fee of $10, payable at registration beginning May 6. Watch for the craft's display at the circulation desk.

Metal Box Join Joanne Manning on Thursday, June 27 from 7 to 8 p.m. to engrave your own special design on to the soft top of a metal box. This decorated metal box can be used to hold jewelry or knick knacks. Registration begins June 3rd at the YA desk. A $3 materials fee is required at registration.

Volunteers Any high school student entering grades 9 through 12 in September who enjoys working with young children may volunteer to assist with the Children's Room Summer Reading program. Volunteers may sign up beginning Saturday, June 1st through Friday, June 21st in the Children's Room. Orientation is Wednesday, June 26th from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers are needed Mondays through Thursdays during July and the first week of August for two-hour periods.

Madame Tussaud's Join us on Tuesday, June 11 as we visit the all-new and spectacular Madame Tussaud's. Here's a chance to meet with your favorite celebrity or dignitary! An excellent "virtual movie," entitled "Experience New York," will be shown and lunch will be served at the one and only Chez Suzette. Since we all seem to be in a New York state of mind, this trip is a must-do! Registration is ongoing. Please make your $63 check payable to the West Hempstead Public Library. Departure time and menu selection to be announced. Trips are open to both residents and non-residents of West Hempstead. There are no refunds unless the trip is cancelled.

Splish Splash Read Registration for Splish Splash Read!, the 2002 Summer Reading Club, begins on Monday, June 17 Children ages 3 to entering grade 5 may participate. Non-residents may register starting Monday, July 1, as long as supplies last.
