Lynbrook

Lynbrook Antique Center announces an antique road show to be held at Atria, 100 Peninsula Blvd. Lynbrook, on Saturday, June 15. The free show will be held from 1-4 p.m. and will include an antique car display, antique appraisals, and refreshments.

Lynbrook Elks Lodge will hold a VA Outreach event on behalf of Northport VA Medical Center on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event welcomes any veterans who wish to enroll for a cost-free blood pressure check to help Northport maintain its current level of services. The event will also offer information on VA benefits, cholesterol screening and glucose screening.

Malverne Historical Society celebrates the sixth anniversary of the opening of Landers Restoration on Sunday, June 2, from noon-3 p.m. The party will be held at the Restoration on the corner of Ocean Ave. and Church Street in Malverne. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. For information call 593-6726.

Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce announces that Atlantic Avenue car shows start Thursday, May 30, 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., every Thursday through the end of summer. There will be live music and DJ's.

League of Women Voters of the Greater Five Towns will have their annual membership luncheon at noon on Tuesday, June 11 at the Big Apple Buffet in Green Acres Mall. There will be a lecture given by New York State League director Barbara Bartoletti. For reservations, call 887-9094.

Scholastic Book Fair at St. John's Lutheran Church on Merrick Road in Lynbrook is offering 25% off all books on Saturday, June 8 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, June 9, from noon-4 p.m.

Lynbrook's Summer Celebration Committee is accepting nominations for Lynbrook's 2002 Man & Woman of the Year. Submit your nominations in writing by Friday, May 31. Malverne

East Rockaway

Lynbrook East Rockaway Soccer Club . Fall soccer registration will be held at Greis Park in Lynbrook, June 1 and June 8, from 9:30-11a.m.and Thursday, May 23 and May 30, from 7:30-9 p.m. Registration is open to all children, kindergarten through 8th grade. For more information call 887-7633.

Attention all Malverne residents! Are you tired of singing to yourself in the shower? Need a wider audience? Show off for your family and neighbors. Sign up for the Malverne Public Library Talent Show. If you are a Malverne resident and have a talent to share, come to the library and fill out a form to perform on Monday, July 1, at the Malverne Public Library. Can you sing, dance, yodel, recite poetry, tell jokes, twirl plates, mime, play the saw or an instrument? Don't keep those talents hidden any longer.

Book Clubs The Literary Club of Lynbrook will hold its next monthly book discussion in the board room at Lynbrook Library on Monday, June 3 at 1 p.m. The group will discuss "The Second Lady" by Irving Wallace, a tale of Cold War intrigue and deadly deception. The Lynbrook Library Evening Book Club will meet on June 5 at the library to discuss Carol Shields' Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Stone Diaries, the extraordinary story of an ordinary woman. Copies of both books will be available at the Circulation Desk. All are welcome to attend the either meetings.

East Rockaway Library

Senior spotlight

Defensive driving course Lynbrook residents over age 50 interested in taking the AARP "55 Alive" course may put their names on a waiting list at the Lynbrook Library's reference desk. Residents on the list are notified as courses are scheduled. All courses are held at Greis Park. Call the library at 599-8630.

Mistreatment of the elderly is a growing concern. If you are 60 and older and being hurt by someone who should be caring, the coalition offers counseling, legal advocacy and other support services to senior citizens in need of help. For aid, please call 542-0404.

Ongoing Events

Summer Playground registration will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 5 in the West End GP room for the North Middle program and 9:30- 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 6 in the Kindergarten Center QR room for the Marion Street program. The program will run from 9 a.m. to noon and 6-8 p.m. from July 1, through August 9.

St. Raymond's CYO is beginning registration for swimming, bowling, cheerleading, and basketball for grades K-12. Registration will be held at the ST. Raymond's school gym on Sunday June 9, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, from 7 - 9 p.m., and Sunday, June 16, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

To Your Health

Support group for parents of gay and lesbian children Peninsula Counseling Center will form a professionally led support group for parents of gays and lesbians of any age at their Lynbrook office.Group coordinator Rena Rauch will address such issues as acceptance, religious attitudes, stigma, and health concerns. The meetings will be held every Wednesday from 7:15 - 8:30 pm. Sessions are $15 per person or family. For information and registration call Rena Rauch at 599-1181. All inquiries are confidential.

Help for battered women The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence operates a safe home for battered mothers and their children, or for women who are victims of violent relationships. If you or someone you know is in trouble, call the hotline at 542-0404. All calls are free and confidential, and counselors are available to help victims find safety.
