Concert for healing The Unitarian Universalist Church of Garden City will host a Musical Concert for Healing, with a lecture on "The Healing Power of Music" given afterwards by Long Beach resident Dr. Steven Angel, a chiropracter and sound healer. Sunday, May 12, 12:30 p.m.

Candidates Forum The League of Women's Voters and the Library present a School and Library Board Candidates Forum on Monday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the second floor auditorium.

Investment advice Chris Jones of the Treasury Department will talk about Series EE Bonds and I Bonds as investment possibilities in America's changing financial landscape. Monday, May 13 at 1:30 p.m.

Prose and Poetry An inter-generational group of writers will read and perform original prose and poetry at the Library, Monday, May 20 at 7 p.m. Students from the Harriet Eisman School and members of South Shore YJSS's Writers Workshop will share their work dealing with the theme of "time."

Gifts of love Entertainer Dottie Burman will present her original, witty songs and stories in honor of Senior Citizens Month at the Library on Sunday, May 19 at 2 p.m.

COMPEER volunteers sought Friendship is powerful medicine when you're isolated and recovering from mental illness. COMPEER volunteers have fun and spend a rewarding hour with a new friend. Humane Society The Long Beach Humane Society welcomes volunteers for fund-raising events, donations and socialization for abandoned pets at the Long Beach Animal Shelter. Dogwalkers are welcome. Teaching volunteers The Harriet Eisman Community School, an alternative high school diploma program located in Long Beach, is seeking volunteers to serve in a variety of positions, including assistant teachers for a variety of subjects, office managers and tutors. If you have three hours a week to spare in the afternoon or evening, a love for education and desire to work with youth aged 14-20, then the Community School could be for you. Donate to soup kitchen The L.B. Food & Friendship I.N.N. is once again looking forward to the generous offering of food from our local residents, so that we can continue to offer a holiday basket to our less fortunate families. Long Beach Auxiliary Police A recruitment drive for the Auxiliary Police is currently underway. Since 1940, The Long Beach Auxiliary Police have assisted the regular police department, serving as extra eyes and ears on the Long Beach streets and helping with traffic and crowd control during local emergencies and special events. Positions are available in the newly formed bike patrol as well as for nightly community patrols. For more information, call Lt. Ken Novak at 431-6868.

Volunteer for C.U.R.B. Volunteers are needed by Citizens United to Remove Barriers (CURB) to help construct ramps for the disabled. Call 889-6579 for more information.

LB Breast Cancer Coalition's Lend A Helping Hand

On-going program that "lends a helping hand" to women from Long Beach and surrounding communities who are diagnosed with breast cancer and presently undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. If you know someone who would be helped by this service, please have them call 897-1344.

Arthritis Support Group The Arthritis Support Group meets the third Tuesday of every month from March through December at

2 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at Long Beach Medical Center to provide support to arthritis

sufferers. Call 897-1504 for more information.

Nar-Anon is for anyone who has known a feeling of desperation concerning the drug addiction problem of someone near to them. Meetings every Friday at 8 p.m. at the West End Community Center.

Nightwatch The Nightwatch Hotline in Long Beach offers crisis counseling and referral to callers from all over the area, free of charge. Hotline hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6-11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Call 889-2332.

Gamblers Anonymous Gamblers Anonymous, a self-help, free 12-step program for compulsive gamblers and those who think they have a problem meets every Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El at 8 P.M. Also available is Gamanon, a self-help group for family of compulsive gamblers. Call 641-0543.

Bereavement Support Group On Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Conference Room C at Long Beach Medical Center. The Medical Center's Counseling Center will offer a weekly bereavement support group for individuals dealing with the death of a family member or loved one. This free support group will be led by a mental health professional. For information, call 897-1270.

9/11 Help Project Liberty, a free, confidential program providing support, education and referral to anyone having difficult coping with the events of Sept. 11 is available at Long Beach Medical Center. For individual or group appointments, call 897-2295.

Diabetes Club The Diabetes Club meets the third Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at Long Beach Medical Center to provide support to diabetics. Topics include nutritional management, medications, eye and foot care, exercise and more.

Lamaze Classes Topics include relaxation techniques and what to expect during labor and delivery. Classes are offered on five consecutive Monday evenings (7:30-9:30 p.m.), or Saturday and Sunday (10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.). Fee is $100 per couple, $50 for Medicaid members. Women should be in their 32nd week of pregnancy when taking the class. Call LBMC's Family Care Center at 897-1350.

Depression Screening Long Beach Medical Center's Counseling Center is offering free, weekly walk-in screenings for persons experiencing depression, Wednesdays from 2 to 3 PM.
