Sewer District The West Long Beach Sewer District Board of Commissioners will meet on Tuesday, Dec.18 and 26 at 10 a.m., 2150 Bay Blvd., Atlantic Beach.
Zoning Board Next meeting Thursday, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. at City Hall.

Holiday concert St. Ignatius's Choral Society will present its annual holiday concert of Handel's "Messiah" on Friday, Dec. 14 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $7.
Bingo Congregation Beth Sholom hosts Bingo every Tuesday. Doors open at 6 p.m., the "early bird" is served at 6:30, and regular games begin at 7. For information, call 432-7464.
Chanukah games The Barry and Florence Friedberg South Shore Y JCC hosts Chanukah Maccabbi Games for singles 30-55 on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 9-11:30 p.m. It will feature sports competitions, relay races and plenty of "goofy" games. Each participant will receive a T-shirt, and winners will receive a trophy. For information, call Marcy Bayowitz at 766-4341 ext. 133.
Library events Saturday, Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. Learn to make your own "Unity Angels" using shells from Long Beach. Craftsperson Debbie Contino will teach the art, which she has used to create pins to support the families of victims of the Sept. 11 tragedy. There is a $2 fee. To register, call 432-7201. Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. Eleanor Mandell Nelson and Karen Faust Baer, a duo-piano and piano duet ensemble, present works of Brahms, Debussy, Saint-Saens, Gershwin and Samuel Barber.

COMPEER volunteers sought Friendship is powerful medicine when you're isolated and recovering from mental illness. COMPEER volunteers have fun and spend a rewarding hour with a new friend. Training is provided and a year's commitment is requested. Call the Mental Health Association of Nassau County at 489-2322 ext. 121 to apply.
Humane Society The Long Beach Humane Society welcomes volunteers for fund-raising events, donations and socialization for abandoned pets at the Long Beach Animal Shelter. Dogwalkers are welcome. Call 889-PETS.
Teaching volunteers The Harriet Eisman Community School, an alternative high school diploma program located in Long Beach, is seeking volunteers to serve in a variety of positions, including assistant teachers for a variety of subjects, office managers and tutors. If you have three hours a week to spare in the afternoon or evening, a love for education and desire to work with youth aged 14-20, then the Community School could be for you. The summer semester runs from July 2-August 23. Call 889-5575 from 1-7 p.m. for more information.
Donate to soup kitchen The L.B. Food & Friendship I.N.N. is once again looking forward to the generous offering of food from our local residents, so that we can continue to offer a holiday basket to our less fortunate families. Long Beach Auxiliary Police A recruitment drive for the Auxiliary Police is currently underway. Since 1940, The Long Beach Auxiliary Police have assisted the regular police department, serving as extra eyes and ears on the Long Beach streets and helping with traffic and crowd control during local emergencies and special events. Positions are available in the newly formed bike patrol as well as for nightly community patrols. For more information, call Lt. Ken Novak at 431-6868.
Volunteers needed for JASA's Friendly Visitors Program If you are interested in sharing time with a senior citizen in his or her home, please call Jolene Boden at 432-0570 for information.
Volunteer for C.U.R.B. Volunteers are needed by Citizens United to Remove Barriers (CURB) to help construct ramps for the disabled. Call 889-6579 for more information.
Volunteer at L.I. Crisis Center The Long Island Crisis Center, which provides a range of services to people in need including a 24/7 hotline service to youth and their families, has many positions available, including becoming a crisis intervention counselor. No experience necessary - extensive training provided. Call 826-0244 for an interview.
Help stop hunger, waste Island Harvest, Long Island's Food Rescue Organization, invites you to volunteer. Island Harvest's mission is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. We need your talents to help our network grow.

Nar-Anon The Nar-Anon Group is for you who know or have known a feeling of desperation concerning the drug addiction problem of someone near to you. Nar-Anon offers anonymous support, using first names only. Meetings are held every Friday evening in the West End Community Center at 8 p.m.
LB Breast Cancer Coalition's Lend A Helping Hand
On-going program that "lends a helping hand" to women from Long Beach and surrounding communities who are diagnosed with breast cancer and presently undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. If you know someone who would be helped by this service, please have them call 897-1344.
Arthritis Support Group The Arthritis Support Group meets the third Tuesday of every month from March through December at 2 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at Long Beach Medical Center to provide support to arthritis sufferers. Call 897-1504 for more information.
Nightwatch The Nightwatch Hotline in Long Beach offers crisis counseling and referral to callers from all over the area, free of charge. Hotline hours are Sunday-Thursday from 6-11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Call 889-2332.
Gamblers Anonymous Gamblers Anonymous, a self-help, free 12-step program for compulsive gamblers and those who think they have a problem meets every Wednesday at Temple Emanu-El at 8 P.M. Also available is Gamanon, a self-help group for family of compulsive gamblers. Call 641-0543.
Disabled adults support The St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center Auxiliary conducts monthly support groups for men and women who are physically disabled. The support group meets on the second Thursday of each month, from 1-2:30 P.M., at EFLI, 506 Stewart Ave., Garden City. For information, call Barbara Toney at 889-8475.
Bereavement Support Group On Thursdays from 2:30 to 3:30 P.M. in Conference Room C at Long Beach Medical Center. The Medical Center's Counseling Center will offer a weekly bereavement support group for individuals dealing with the death of a family member or loved one. Bereavement The Winds of Change II Bereavement Support Group meets the first Monday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Lido/Pt. Lookout Firehouse in Lido.Meetings are free. For further information, call 897-8700
Diabetes Club The Diabetes Club meets the third Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium at Long Beach Medical Center to provide support to diabetics. Topics include nutritional management, medications, eye and foot care, exercise and more.
Lamaze Classes Topics include relaxation techniques and what to expect during labor and delivery. Classes are offered on five consecutive Monday evenings (7:30-9:30 p.m.), or Saturday and Sunday (10:30 a.m.-6 p.m.). Fee is $100 per couple, $50 for Medicaid members. Women should be in their 32nd week of pregnancy when taking the class. Call LBMC's Family Care Center at 897-1350.
Weekly Depression Screening Long Beach Medical Center's Counseling Center is offering free, weekly walk-in screenings for persons experiencing depression, Wednesdays from 2 to 3 PM. Includes an interview with a mental health professional. Pre-registration is not required. For information, call The Counseling Center at 897-1270.
