Health Assessment. There will be a health assessment with June Friedel, R.N. every first Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Five Towns Senior Center. This complete one-on-one health assessment includes blood pressure, drug compatibility and discussion about your health concerns in total privacy. It's sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.

Senior Spotlight

The Five Towns Senior Center. Every Wednesday at 10 a.m. there will be a Drama Discussion led by Harold Engel. Every Thursday at 10 a.m. there will be a singing group led by Ruth Shuster. Basic Bridge Instruction will be Wednesdays at 12:45 p.m., led by Diane Goldstein.

Free senior citizen seminars on Thursdays, October 4 and 25, 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., focuses on the special needs of people 55 years and older. A panel of real estate professionals will be invited to speak and answer questions. For information, call Joan Small at (516) 256-3311.

Adult Day Care. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA holds an adult social day care program for frail and/ or physically-challenged older adults at 111 Irving Place in Woodmere. The program includes social activities, recreational crafts, exercise, yoga, nutrition education, kosher lunches, counseling and nursing support services. The group provides an intimate caring environment in which seniors flourish. "Come Alive" and other stimulating programs and enriching new friendships are available in a family atmosphere. The program meets on Mondays and Thursdays and kosher lunches are served. Limited transportation is provided. Special Event

Important conference. A multi-community conference, sponsored by Peninsula Counseling Center, will be held Wednesday, Oct. 17, at Lawrence High School auditorium and will feature a national expert on school safety and school violence, Dr. James Garbarino. The entire community is urged to attend this important meeting entitled, "Parents Under Siege: Why You Are The Solution, Not The Problem In Your Child's Life." A sense of place. Join Natalie A. Naylor, Ed.D., Professor Emerita at Hofstra University and past director of the Long Island Studies Institute, will give an interesting slide/lecture/presentation about Long Island, at Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway, Lawrence on Sunday, September 30, 2 p.m.

Rock Hall Country Fair at the Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway, Lawrence is on Saturday and Sunday, October 20, 21, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Enjoy an exciting trip into the days of yesteryear with an olde time lumberjack and logrolling show. Events include country band, historian, colonial cooking demonstration, blacksmith, children's performer and pony rides.

Tranquility hour at the Woodmere-Lawrence United Methodist Church every Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. at 1023 Broadway.

Holocaust Memorial and Educational Center of Nassau County is seeking docents to serve as guides or historians. All interested persons, including survivors, liberators, Righteous Among Nations samaritans, or second generation relatives are encouraged to apply or share their testimony. Department of Senior Citizens Affairs and the Nassau County Medical Center will provide flu and/or pneumonia immunization inoculations at no expense at the Peninsula Library, 280 Central Avenue. Immunization date is Thursday, November 15, from 9:45 a.m. to noon. The registration date is Tuesday, October 16, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. District #15 residents age 60 years and over are eligible.

Peninsula Public Library will be open Monday, October 8, 1 to 5 p.m. in observance of Columbus Day. The fall schedule is as follows: Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Exhibition entitled "Censorship in Schools and Libraries" will be on view at the Bentley Gallery at the Peninsula Library, 280 Central Avenue, for all of October.

PPL is offering a defensive driving course for drivers 50 years or older. The course will be given at the Peninsula Library, 280 Central Avenue, on two Tuesdays, October 30 and November 6, 1 to 5 p.m. Registration is Thursday, October 11, beginning at 9 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. The fee is $10 per person (check only) and payable to AARP at the time of registration.

Ongoing Events

Chumash Class The Young Israel of Hewlett, located at 1 Piermont Ave., is having Chumash Classes for men on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. during the winter and spring months.

Help is being offered for people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia in a program called "The Club." Club members attend the program two days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Women meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, men on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Friday's joint program is available for some members. L.I.C.C. Training Long Island Crisis Center is looking for volunteers. L..I.C.C. offers a 24/7 hotline, internet counseling seven days a week, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. Call to set up an interview at 826-0244.

Self-Help Group A mental health community organization, helping people deal with fear, depression and anxiety, meets on Monday evenings at 8:15 p.m. at St. Joseph's Parish, 1346 Broadway, Hewlett. Call 433-1742.

Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA will present SKIP (Special Kids in Programs) for children with special needs (ages 4-8). Literacy for the deaf. Peninsula Counseling Center offers a new literacy program for deaf adults. Basic and advanced classes in reading and writing are available. There is no fee for this service. Peninsula Counseling Center is offering a new program for adults with severe physical disabilities. "Out and About" brings physically disabled adults together on Thursdays for three hours of socializing, sharing ideas and discussion of a variety of topics. The group, which meets weekly at Temple Emanu-El in Lynbrook, is looking for new members as well as guest speakers.

The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library offers 55 Alive/mature driving courses on an on-going basis to residents of School District 14. For courses and registration dates, call the library at 374-1967.

YM & YWHA Programs. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA is happy to announce some wonderful programs for retired, enthusiastic adults, which start on Monday, October 15. Shalom Club meets every Monday at 1 p.m. at the "Y," 207 Grove Ave., Cedarhurst. The group begins with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a wide variety of wonderful and informative programs. Golden Circle meets every Tuesday at 12 p.m. at Temple Beth El, Broadway and Locust, in Cedarhurst. Starting with refreshments and light exercise, this group always has interesting lectures or entertainment for all to enjoy.

55 Alive Driving Course. Registration is now open for the "55 Alive" driving course given through AARP at the Young Israel Senior League, located at 2716 Healy Ave., Far Rockaway.

Grandparents raising grandchildren. If you are raising your children's children, this support group is for you. The group will meet Mondays at 7p.m. Call Lyn Dakes, CSW at Peninsula Counseling Center, 569-6600. Fee of $15 a week for the eight-week group. A grandparent will co-lead the group with Dakes. Groups meet in the Woodmere Office, 124 Franklin Place.

The Young Israel of Woodmere offers a Torah study and beginner's prayer service class on Sunday mornings at 10:30. The synagogue is also holding a series of Hebrew reading classes for beginners on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Call 295-0150.

Hebrew Classes. The Young Israel of Hewlett is offering Reading Hebrew Level 2, "Learn to read from a Sidur," Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and "Bible Basics" Thursday mornings 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Young Israel is located at 1 Piermont Ave. in Hewlett.

Hadassah. The Nassau Region of Hadassah, in cooperation with the Federation Employment and Guidance Services, is offering a special program for children, ages four to ten, with learning disabilities who would enjoy a Jewish family program. Called "Al Galgalim," the program offers songs, crafts, stories, learning and ethical issues on every holiday and the Sabbath to the participating children and their families. Bereavement Group. The Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA is offering a Bereavement Group. The objective of this six-week group is to provide support for the recently bereaved in a caring and warm atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths. This group will be held at the Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA, located at 207 Grove Ave., Cedarhurst. A $40 pre-registration fee is required. Call 569-6733.

Newly separated or divorced men and women can meet at a 12-session counseling group at the Center For Separated and Divorced, 381 Sunrise Highway, 2nd Floor, on Tuesdays from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Call 599-1181.

Girls socialization. Peninsula Counseling Center, 124 Franklin Place, Woodmere, has formed a group which meets on Tuesday evenings, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Girls learn skills necessary for forming healthy relationships.
