Lynbrook

Senior Citizen Club meets every Wednesday at the Greis Park Administration Building, starting Wednesday, September 12, from noon to 3 p.m. Refreshments served.

Water Corp will hold its third Yard Sale to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, on Saturday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the water company's office on Sunrise Highway and Peninsula Boulevard. Annual harvest festival takes place at St. John's Lutheran Church, Peninsula Boulevard and Merrick Road, on Sunday, October 14, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be apples, pumpkins, hot dogs, coffee, cake, crafts and much more.

Kids Day, an annual celebration of children's health, safety, and environmental awareness, will be held Saturday, September 22 from noon until 3 p.m. at the offices of Dr. Jill Feldhun, family chiropractor, at 149 Broadway. An award ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. There will be food, games, giveaways, a magic show and guest appearances. Holy Name Society of Our Lady of Peace Church is having its annual family communion pancake breakfast on Sunday, September 16, at the Lynbrook Elks Lodge, Hempstead Avenue. Reserve any time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on that morning. Adults are $4 and children are $2.

Roller hockey summer registration is available for fall 2001 at Greis Park and closes on September 15. Beginner clinic for 5- and 6-year old children: 10 one-hour sessions. Twelve-game season for all divisions, playoffs and finals for all divisions. High school division for ages 14-18. Mandatory equipment: helmet with cage, shin-knee guards, elbow pads, gloves, athletic cup, stick and mouthpiece. Registration fee includes team jersey and insurance. Malverne

Antique car show will take place in the Malverne commuter parking lot on Sunday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bring the entire family for a day of fun and nostalgia.

Mothers of Malverne is having its first meeting of the 2001/2002 year on Monday, September 10, 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Malverne Public Library, 61 St. Thomas Place. MOM meets the first Monday of each month thereafter.

East Rockaway

Nursery school registration is being accepted for the 2001 school year. The Mothers' Center of Southwest Nassau in East Rockaway offers classes for 2-4-year-olds. "Mommy and Me" and discussion groups are also offered. Call 599-7788.

'Fly with the Angels Run' is a 4-mile race that will start promptly at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, September 8 and will be preceded at 8:45 a.m. by the Junior Angels 1/4 Mile Fun Run for youngsters. The race begins and ends at Bay Park.

Senior spotlight

Defensive driving course Lynbrook residents over age 50 interested in taking the AARP "55 Alive" course may put their names on a waiting list at the Lynbrook Library's reference desk. Residents on the list are notified as courses are scheduled. All courses are held at Greis Park. Call the library at 599-8630.

Senior South Shore Y Jewish Community Center will be meeting every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Malverne Jewish Center, 1 Norwood Ave. in Malverne. Call 766-4341.

Free counseling is offered by the Villages of East Rockaway and Lynbrook to senior citizen residents. Call Dennis Dunn, director, Senior Citizen Counseling at 887-4848.

Mistreatment of the elderly is a growing concern. If you are 60 and older and being hurt by someone who should be caring, the coalition offers counseling, legal advocacy and other support services to senior citizens in need of help. For aid, please call 542-0404.

Reading calendars will be available for preschoolers, children in grades K-6 and teens. Stickers, raffle prizes and certificates will be given to those who participate and complete their calendars.

Amazing Time Travel Show is a musical play with a wizard, a caveman, a pirate and a dinosaur, showing on Tuesday, September 11, 4 p.m. for children 3 1/2 and up.

Internet and e-mail class will be offered by the library. This lecture-based seminar will explain how to get online, find information, understand the jargon of the Internet and send e-mail. Registration is ongoing.

Toddlertime begins Monday, September 24. There are two sessions: 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. Children, 18 months to 30 months-old and an adult are invited. This is a six-week program and the cost is $24 per child. Registration begins September 6. Fliers available at the library.

Computer kindergarten is a 2-hour, relaxed-paced, hands-on class on Tuesday, September 25. Lynbrook residents may register beginning Monday, September 10, 10 a.m. Non-residents may register beginning Thursday, September 20. Picture-book time for children 3 to 5, will begin Tuesday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m. or Thursday, October 4, at 1:30 p.m. Pre-schoolers share stories, songs, fingerplays and crafts for 45 minutes. Proof of age is required.

Summer Reading Club 2001 This program is open to children of pre-school age, up to 8th grade. Come and register any time.

PJ Story Time for children 3 years and older. Come in on Thursdays at 7 p.m. for 30 minutes of sleep stories. Have children wear their favorite PJs and bring along a special stuffed-animal friend.

Help for battered women The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence operates a safe home for battered mothers and their children, or for women who are victims of violent relationships. If you or someone you know is in trouble, call the hotline at 542-0404. All calls are free and confidential, and counselors are available to help victims find safety.

Women's group meets in the Lynbrook office of the Peninsula Counseling Center on Sunrise Highway every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Call Betty Serepica at 599-1181.

Overeaters Anonymous meetings will be held every Saturday at 10 a.m. at South Nassau Community Hospital in Oceanside. Call (631) 924-0440.

Alcohol/substance abuse counseling is offered by LINK Center, 185 Merrick Rd., to the East Rockaway, Lynbrook and Malverne communities. LINK is also DMV-certified to provide treatment to regain lost driving privileges. Call 887-4848.

Prenatal, obstetrical and newborn services at Women's Health Center, Franklin Hospital Medical Center, Valley Stream, provides comprehensive services to women in need. Center open on Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cancer support group at Mercy Hospital, 1000 North Village Ave., Rockville Centre, will be held for patients and their families on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
