African-American museum in Hempstead is pleased to announce the opening of two new exhibits: "African American Places of Worship on Long Island: Climbing Jacob's Ladder," a photographic display by Robert L. Harrison; and "To God Be The Glory," a photographic exhibition featuring the oldest African Methodist Episcopal Churches in Suffolk County. The museum is located at 110 North Franklin Street. Regular museum hours are Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Sunday, 1 to 4:45 p.m. and Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Support Groups
Substance help. Alcoholics Anonymous meetings are held every Thursday evening and Alanon meetings are held every Sunday evening in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Mothers helping mothers. The Sunrise Mother's Center, a non-profit, nonsectarian, member-run organization of mothers helping mother. The center is a place for mothers to meet, share experiences and develop new or existing skills. Discussion groups, committee work and special events, as well as a Time for Two program for children ages 12 months to three years old and their caregivers are also available. The Decalogue The remaining parts of Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski's films about the Ten Commandments return to the library.

Cast Away will be shown at the library. Tom Hanks plays a FedEx systems engineer who is stranded on a remote and uninhabited island in the South Pacific. No tickets are needed and admission is free. Coffee and tea will be available at noon at the afternoon showing.

The Friends of the Library are sponsoring an art contest for children at the library. The subject of the artwork is "The Things We Did Last Summer" and entries should be no larger than 11x14 and will be accepted at the Community Services Desk. The fee is $5 per entry. Judging will take place on Monday, Oct. 15, and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
Exhibition Art students from the Woodland Middle School, under the direction of Dr. John W. Healy, will exhibit their paintings in the downstairs Meeting Room during August.
September hours The library will be closed Labor Day Weekend, Saturday to Monday, September 1 to 3. Regular Saturday hours will resume on September 8 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). The rest of the month the library will be operating on the following schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Councilman Gary Hudes will visit the library. He will present a short slide presentation entitled "The Town of Hempstead and You" and explain the many services that the town provides and then answer your questions. This gives members of the community an opportunity to speak directly to your local government representative. Coffee and tea are available at noon.

Cabaret Night of the new season features talented vocalist Jimmy Moore at the library. Jimmy, who has sung extensively in nightclubs and musicals, will perform a program of timeless songs from such Broadway musicals as "Oklahoma!," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Carousel," "Fiddler on the Roof," and many others. He'll also include some jazz standards.
