Lynbrook

Blood drive being held Sunday, August 12, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Knights of Columbus Hall, 78 Hempstead Avenue.

Benefit Concert to help rebuild the Broadway Beanery, Wednesday, August 15, 8 p.m. to midnight at the Lynbrook Elks Club, 57 Hempstead Ave. Tickets cost $10. Call 593-1427.

Pool registration The Village of Lynbrook's Recreation Dept. is holding registration for the Village's new public pool at Greis Park. Applications are available at the park's Recreation Building, Village Hall, Lynbrook Library and local stores. Residents of the Incorporated Village will be asked for proof of residence, valid ID and proof of age. Certified lifeguards are also needed through Labor Day. Call 599-8000.

Thursday Night Car Classics is sponsored by the Lynbrook Chamber of Commerce. Every Thursday, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., until August 23, classic vintage cars will be displayed on Atlantic Avenue between Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road. Free golf clinic, sponsored by Larry's Golf Center, will be held at Greis Park this summer. There will be two sessions on Wednesday, August 22 and 29, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. for boys and girls ages 8-12. Registration is being accepted at the Lynbrook Recreation Center Office Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Participants must bring their own golf club. The clinic is for residents of Lynbrook only. Call 599-8300.

Roller hockey summer registration is available for fall 2001 at Greis Park and closes on September 15. Beginner clinic for 5- and 6-year old children: ten one-hour sessions. Twelve game season for all divisions, playoffs and finals for all divisions. High school division ages 14-18. Mandatory equipment: helmet with cage, shin-knee guards, elbow pads, gloves, athletic cup, stick and mouthpiece. Registration fee includes team jersey and insurance. Incorporated Village residents pay $85. School District 20 non-village residents pay $100. Non-residents pay $125. Register before August 4 and save $10. Elvis impersonation is being hosted by the Lynbrook Recreation Department: Friday, August 17: Usual Suspects. All concerts begin at 8 p.m. and are held in Greis Park. There is no admission fee.

Lynbrook Civic Association would like to residents that there is a 24-hour automated hotline for airplane noise complaints regarding air traffic to or from JFK International Airport. Calls can be made anytime day or night to report problems with airplane noise disturbances. Call 747-1417.

Malverne

Beach trek is a vacation Bible experience. Come to Grace Lutheran Church, 400 Hempstead Ave., on Monday to Thursday, August 13 to 17, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This is for preschoolers to adults. The experience includes Bible Study, food, fellowship, crafts, games, singing and more. Dinner will be available each night, by preorder, at 6 p.m. The cost is $20 for first child, $15 for siblings, $30 per family. Challenge of the bands is being sponsored by the Malverne Youth Board on Friday, September 1, 7:30 p.m., at Municipal Parking Lot #8. Admission is free. Bring your own chairs. Call Stephen Canzoneri at 599-1200 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Hershey Park trips are being planned by the Malverne Youth Board for Saturday, August 25. Registration is at Village Hall, 99 Church Street. Tickets are $22 per person. Bus leaves at 6:15 a.m. and returns approximately at 10 p.m.

Malverne Youth Board is holding a free basketball clinic at Harris Field on Tuesdays, through August 21 for children ages 11 to 16 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Bring your own ball.

Celebrations Karaoke Night will be held Saturday, August 25, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the gazebo. Call Malverne Village Hall at 599-1200.

East Rockaway

Nursery school registration is being accepted for the 2001 school year. The Mothers' Center of Southwest Nassau in East Rockaway offers classes for 2-4-year-olds. "Mommy and Me" and discussion groups are also offered. Call 599-7788.

East Rockaway sports John Street Complex is open from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. for non-league volleyball and basketball play. The complex is open Monday through Saturday, through August 31. Senior spotlight

Defensive driving course Lynbrook residents over age 50 interested in taking the AARP "55 Alive" course may put their names on a waiting list at the Lynbrook Library's reference desk. Residents on the list are notified as courses are scheduled. All courses are held at Greis Park. Call the library at 599-8630.

Senior South Shore Y Jewish Community Center will be meeting every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Malverne Jewish Center, 1 Norwood Ave. in Malverne. Call 766-4341.

Free counseling is offered by the Villages of East Rockaway and Lynbrook to senior citizen residents. Call Dennis Dunn, director, Senior Citizen Counseling at 887-4848.

Mistreatment of the elderly is a growing concern. If you are 60 and older and being hurt by someone who should be caring, the coalition offers counseling, legal advocacy and other support services to senior citizens in need of help. For aid, please call 542-0404.

Reading calendars will be available for preschoolers, children in grades K-6 and teens. Stickers, raffle prizes and certificates will be given to those who participate and complete their calendars.

Summer story time is being offered for preschoolers, children in grades K-2 grades and families. Flyers for all story times are at the library.

Book discussion groups will be available for grades 5 and 6. Titles from required reading lists for Malverne S.D. will be used. A parent/child group for children in grades 5-7 and their parents will meet on Tuesday, August 21. Children in grades 3 and 4 can join a story and discussion group that will meet Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. Register now.

Internet and e-mail class will be offered by the library. This lecture-based seminar will explain how to get online, find information, understand the jargon of the Internet and send e-mail. Registration is ongoing.

Help for battered women The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence operates a safe home for battered mothers and their children, or for women who are victims of violent relationships. If you or someone you know is in trouble, call the hotline at 542-0404. All calls are free and confidential, and counselors are available to help victims find safety.

Overeaters Anonymous meetings will be held every Saturday at 10 a.m. at South Nassau Community Hospital in Oceanside. Call (631) 924-0440.

Prenatal, obstetrical and newborn services at Women's Health Center, Franklin Hospital Medical Center, Valley Stream, provides comprehensive services to women in need. Center open on Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Cancer support group at Mercy Hospital, 1000 North Village Ave., Rockville Centre, will be held for patients and their families on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
