School Boards

Bellmore meetings. The Bellmore Board of Education meets every third Tuesday of the month in the library of the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center at 8 p.m. North Bellmore Board of Education meets at 8 p.m. every second Thursday of the month. Meetings are held at the North Bellmore district administration office.

Merrick meetings. Every second and fourth Tuesday, the Merrick Board of Education meets at 8 p.m. at the Norman J. Levy Lakeside School. The North Merrick School District meets every second Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. at the Harold D. Fayette School.

High schools. The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School Board of Education meetings are held on the first Wednesday of the month at 8 p.m.at Brookside High School. Call 623-8900 for more information.

Community Groups



Merrick Kiwanis. The Kiwanis Club of Merrick, serving the community for more than 50 years, is looking for motivated people to serve Merrick and its citizens. The public is invited to attend the club's weekly Thursday evening dinner meeting at 6:45 p.m. at the Merrick Mall Restaurant. Legion 1282. Merrick Post 1282 of the American Legion meets every third Tuesday of the month at 8 p.m. For more information, contact Tom Riordan, commander, at 546-8765.

Sons of Italy. Giovanni Caboto Lodge 2372, "The Family Lodge" in Bellmore, meets every third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the Bellmore Exempt Hall on Petit Avenue in Bellmore. New members are always welcome. Call Tommasa Dato, president, at 735-9875 for more information.

Bellmore libraries



Safe driving.The Bellmore Memorial Library will offer the following defensive driving classes:Thursday, August 9 and Thursday, August 16 from 7-10 p.m. The cost is $35; An AARP Safe Driving Class will be held on Thursday, July 12 and July 19 from 7-10 p.m. The cost is $10. Summer films. The Children's Services Department at the North Bellmore will show the following movies on Thursdays at 2 p.m.: August 2 - Winnie the Pooh: Gone with the Wind, Nothing but the 'Tooth' and How Much is that Rabbit in the Window?; August 9 - Curious George Festival; August 16 - Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible No Good Very Bad Day; August 23 - NO FILMS; August 30 - Are You My Mother?, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back. Library Mystery. Children ages 8-12 may attend a mystery at the North Bellmore Library on Friday, August 10 at 10 a.m. Children will act as detectives trying to figure out who committed a crime in the library. In order find the criminal, the detectives will use many of the reference sources found the library. In-person registration will begin on Wednesday, August 1. Call 785-6260.

Chemistry's a gas. Children who have completed grades 3-5 are invited to attend the North Bellmore Library's 'Chemistry is a Gas' program on Wednesday, August 15 at 10:30 a.m. Local chemistry teacher Josephine Parlagreco will show how pressure, volume and temperature will affect gases by making miniature cups, imploding soda cans and being vacuumed sealed in a trash bag. There will be a $1 non-refundable material's fee payable at registration which begins Wednesday, August 8. Call 785-6260 for information.

Summer reading. The North Bellmore Library will once again sponsor a summer reading club for children ages three to 12. This year's state-wide theme is "2001: A Reading Odyssey." Children who participate in the program must read or have read to them ten books. The program will run through Friday, August 17. A pizza party will take place at the end of the summer. Single again? Whether newly widowed or divorced, re-entering the "Singles World" does not have to be as daunting as it seems. Linda Andris and Barbara Rosicato of the Single Gourmet will be at the Bellmore Library on Thursday, July 26 at 7:30 p.m. Learn how to regain your confidence and find out where to make new friends. Bus trip. Registration for the North Merrick Public Library's August bus trip to West Point, Hotel Thayer Luncheon and Hudson River Cruise is currently under way. The trip is scheduled for Tuesday, August 21. Begin your days with a guided tour of West Point, enjoy a delicious hot and cold buffet lunch at Hotel Thayer and relax on a leisurely two-hour cruise down the majestic Hudson River to West Haverstraw abroad the Commander. The cost of the trip is $61 (all inclusive), payable by check ONLY to Halpin-McCarney. The bus will leave from the library at 8 a.m. and return around 6:30 p.m. Call 378-7474.

Computer workshop.The Bellmore Library will offer a free Advanced E-mail Workshop on Wednesday, August 8 from 7-9 p.m. and an Introduction to the Internet and E-mail demonstration on Thursday, August 9 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. All classes are free and registration is required. Call 785-2990.

Merrick Libraries



Visit Bellport. The Merrick Library will sponsor a bus trip to Bellport on Wednesday, August 8. The trip will include shopping at the Bellport Outlet Complex, a full-curse lunch at the Bellport Country Club and tickets to the musical "Funny Girl" at the Gateway Theatre. The bus will leave from the Merrick Library Wing at 8:45 a.m. and return at approximately 6:30 p.m. The cost is $63, which includes lunch, transportation, the show and all gratuities, payable by check to the Merrick Library. . Registration will take place at the Reference Desk. There are no refunds unless the trip is cancelled. Call 379-3476.

Book Bingo. The Merrick Library will present Book Bingo on Thursday, August 9 from 7:30-9 p.m. for children entering grades three-seven. Book titles take the place of numbers and book prizes are awarded to winner. Call 379-3476.

Film festival. The North Merrick Library will present "O Brother, Where Aert Thou?" on Friday, August 17. Both movies are rated PG-13 and begin at 2 p.m. Call 378-7474.

Friday flicks. The Merrick Library will present Friday Flicks on Friday July 20, August 3 and August 17 at 1:30 p.m. Short films and cartoons will be shown and iced tea and crackers will served. On Friday, July 13 the library will present "The Swan Princess" will be shown. Call 379-3476 for information.

Children's Room at the Merrick Library now has music CDs for kids. The CDs will circulate for 14 days and are located on the yellow turnstile. Some of the titles available include Peter and the Wolf and Raffi's Evergreen Everblue.

Computer workshops. The Merrick Library will present the following computer workshops: "Introduction to the Internet" on Friday, July 27 from 9:30-11 a.m.; and "Introduction to Microsoft Word" on Thursday, September 13 from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. The workshops are slow-paced, hands-on and user-friendly.
