Health Assessment.There will be a health assessment with June Friedel, R.N. every first Tuesday of the month at 10 A.M. in the Five Towns Senior Center. This complete one-on-one health assessment includes blood pressure, drug compatibility and discussion about your health concerns in total privacy. It's sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.
Special Event
Five Towns Community Chest Fair is fast approaching on Saturday, September 23, from 11 A.M. to 9 P.M. and Sunday, September 24, from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. The 15th annual event will be held, as usual, in Cedarhurst Park, with an annual parade taking place at Central Avenue at noon on that Sunday. Admission to the park is free. Basketball, a football toss and a speed pitch contest will be some of the added fun events to this year's fair. An International Food Court, featuring Italian, American, Kosher and Continental dishes, will also be available to fair-goers.
Sisterhood of Temple Hillel will hold its semi-annual thrift sale on Sunday, September 24, between 9 A.M. and 2 P.M. at the temple, 1000 Rosedale Road in North Woodmere. Anyone wishing more information may call 791-6344.
Temple Hillel of North Woodmere will inaugurate the High Holy Day season with a presentation of "Family Reunion"--a production of the Irauh Theatre of Jerusalem. "Family Reunion" is the story of two sisters in Jerusalem who are planning a family reunion to celebrate an event in their lives. The audience does not know it at first, but the "family" is the audience itself--and several audience members are asked to participate and play roles in the show. Throughout the performance, the sisters are preparing a pot of matzo ball soup, which is shared with the audience at show's end. The show will be presented, courtesy of American Cleaners, on Saturday, September 23, at 9:15 P.M. at Temple Hillel of North Woodmere, 1000 Rosedale Road. The 17th annual Rockaway Music and Arts Council Gateway National Recreation Area will present Festival 2000, at Jacob Riis Park in Queens. The event is set for Saturday, September 23, and Sunday, September 24, from 11 A.M. to 6 P.M. Admission is free, as is parking, a petting zoo and pony rides. A flower show will be presented by The Belle Harbor Garden Club.
The Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway in Lawrence, will hold its 15th annual country fair on Saturday, October 21, and Sunday, October 22, from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. Come and enjoy the following activities: Revolutionary War Encampment, a country band and animal farm, crafts, historical theater, harvest market and jugglers. Make your own scarecrow, too. Enjoy food, blacksmith, spinning demonstrations and more. All proceeds to benefit the Friends of Rock Hall.
Stories by the Fireside- Sarah, Plain and Tall-will be told at Rock Hall Museum, 199 Broadway in Lawrence, on Saturday, November 4, from 10:30 A.M. to noon. It is for girls, ages 7 to 11, who love the adventure of reading and to listen to stories in the parlor at historic Rock Hall. space is limited. the fee is $3.50 per session.
Coats For Kids. Do you have a winter coat you don't use? Are you cleaning out your closets? Don't throw them out. Voter Registration. Peninsula Section of National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, and Five Towns Jewish Council began a cooperative voter registration drive on August 16. It is essential that all eligible people register and vote. Documents proving eligibility (i.e.18 years of age by Election Day, and American Citizen) are required. People who will be away on Election Day and students attending out of town colleges who won't be coming home that day will need absentee ballots which will be available during this time. Flu Shots. The Five Towns Senior Center, located at 124 Franklin Place, Woodmere, is pleased to announce that flu shots will be given at the center on Wednesday, October 11, from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. to members of the community aged 65 and over. There is no out-of-pocket expense for this immunization. Senior citizens who wish to participate must register at the center and fill out a medical history form, after which they will be given an appointment.

Paul Gauguin discussion. Art historian Carol Dubs' colorful and exciting slides will illuminate the lives and works of Paul Gauguin and Vincent Van Gogh, focusing on the period that the artists worked together. H-W Library Art Gallery. Paintings by Jack Nodiff will be on display in the gallery of the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library from Saturday, September 9, through Thursday, October 26. Mr. Nodiff, a resident of East Rockaway, received degrees from New York University and Long Island University. He is listed in "Who's Who in American Art." Mr. Nodiff also studied art at the Brooklyn Museum, Five Towns Music and Arts Foundation and The Art Students League. His paintings are primarily representational, specializing in beach scenes, seascapes and landscapes. His works have appeared at the Salmagundi Club as well as in many museums and galleries. Library offers Flu Shot. The Peninsula Public Library will once again offer Flu and/or Pneumonia shots to seniors (60 years or older) at NO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. Registration at the library will be on Tuesday, October 3, from 9 A.M.-11 A.M. and in the evening from 6 P.M.-8 P.M. You must register to receive the shot. The inoculations will be administered at the library on Tuesday, October 10, 9 A.M.-12 noon under the supervision of licensed nurses, staff members of Nassau County Medical Center. As a community service, Peninsula Public Library, the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizens Affairs, in cooperation with the Nassau County Medical Center, are sponsoring this No Out Of Pocket Expense Immunization Program. Bereavement Group. The Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA will be offering a Bereavement Group starting Tuesday, July 11, at 2 P.M. The objective of this six-week group is to provide support for the recently bereaved in a caring and warm atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths. This group will be held at the Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA, located at 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. A $40 pre-registration fee is required. For more info call 569-6733.
Chesed Organization. Kesher is a local youth-based chesed organization developed to promote acts of kindness in the community. They are currently collecting items in new or like new condition to distribute to those in need. Tax receipts are available upon request for all donations made. Temple Hillel Sisterhood will collect non-perishable, kosher food for distribution to hungry children and families. Everything from peanut butter and pasta to tuna and toaster pastry is needed and will be picked up weekly by United Jewish Appeal for distribution to needy families. The program began on Monday, September 18 and will continue every Monday and Tuesday during Hebrew School hours, 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. YM & YWHA Programs. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA is happy to announce some wonderful programs for retired, enthusiastic adults. Shalom Club meets every Monday at 1 P.M. at the "Y," 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. The group begins with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a wide variety of wonderful and informative programs. Golden Circle meets every Tuesday at 12 P.M. at Temple Beth El, Broadway and Locust, in Cedarhurst. Starting with refreshments and light exercise, this group always has interesting lectures or entertainment for all to enjoy.

Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island, Inc., in cooperation with the Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA, has formed "Tuesday Activity Center," a group for individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease and their spouses and families, at the " Y," 207 Grove Avenue in Cedarhurst, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. Peninsula Counseling Center is offering a new program for adults with severe physical disabilities. "Out and About" brings physically disabled adults together on Thursdays for three hours of socializing, sharing ideas and discussion of a variety of topics. The group, which meets weekly at Temple Emanu-El in Lynbrook, is looking for new members as well as guest speakers.
Bridge Committee Applicants. The Hewlett-Woodmere School District Bridge Committee is presently seeking applicants who are interested in serving on its board. The committee's sole purpose is to reach out to all the members of the community and to encourage participation in the acquisition of knowledge of the present work and future plans of the District 14 school system. There are presently three available openings on the board. Members are chosen to represent the diverse population of the community. If you are interested in serving on the board, please send a letter of your interest to the Bridge Committee, at One Johnson Place, Woodmere. Include some personal background data to help the committee with its selection. Letters of application must be submitted by August 15 and new members will be contacted in the Fall. All others letters will be filed for future use when openings become available.
Stretch and Flex Class. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA will host a Summer Friendship Circle, starting Monday, July 10, at 11 A.M. The six-week group will begin with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a bring your own brown bag lunch and socialize, then conclude with lectures on contemporary life issues.
