Meeting Place

5T Senior Center. There will be a Five Towns Senior Center General Meeting on Wednesday, September 13, at 124 Franklin Place,Woodmere. At 6:30 there will be a group coping session led by Helen Murello, M.S.R., N.C.S.. At 7:30 refreshments will be served. At 7:45, the meeting begins.

Health Assessment.There will be a health assessment with June Friedel, R.N. every first Tuesday of the month at 10 A.M. in the Five Towns Senior Center. This complete one-on-one health assessment includes blood pressure, drug compatibility and discussion about your health concerns in total privacy. It's sponsored by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs.

Lawrence Pirchei.There will be a youth group at Rabbi Gruber's Shul on September 9, at 2 P.M.-3:30 P.M. The Shul is located at 2 Rockaway Turnpike in Lawrence. It is for grades 1A- 6th. Pirchei is an organization dedicated to the Torach Education and Yiddishe Ruach of Youth. In addition, the fact that Pirchei takes place predominantly on Shabbos afternoons, it will afford the boys the opportunity to spend their free time in a wholesome, fun and educationally stimulating environment.

Tour the heavens. "The Universe Down to Earth"- Tour the heavens at the Five Towns Senior Center, 124 Franklin Place in Woodmere, on Friday, September 8, at 10 A.M. Look at the changing status of humans in the expanding universe, from Aristotle through Einstein and on to Rose Center (in lay person's terminology.)

Coats For Kids. Do you have a winter coat you don't use? Are you cleaning out your closets? Don't throw them out. Keep a child warm this winter by donating unwanted children's coats at: Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg's office, 20 West Park Avenue, Long Beach. Call 431-0500. Office hours 9 A.M.-5 P.M. All coats collected will be dry cleaned free of charge by: Delta Cleaners 83 East Park Ave., Long Beach. And forwarded to "Coats for Kids" for distribution to needy families. Deadline: October 1.

Antiques Roadshow Primer. On Saturday evening, September 16, the Friends of Rock Hall invite all collectors to meet a distinguished guest speaker, Carol Prisant, author of "Antique Roadshow Primer", an introductory on PBS. Also an appraiser of fine and decorative arts, Ms. Prisant will talk about the expertise, passion, and adventure in uncovering a treasure. A perfect opportunity to ask the expert questions about that old chest filled with memorabilia in the attic! This event will begin at 8 P.M. and since seating is limited, please RSVP as soon as possible. There will be a book signing and refreshments will be served. Appraisal Day. On Sunday, September 17, a special appraisal event, sponsored by the Friends of Rock Hall, will give each individual an opportunity to meet one-on-one with three specialists from the prestigious Phillips Auctioneers, the world's largest auction house. For a donation of $10 an item, each person will receive a verbal evaluation of heirlooms and treasures. Membership fee is $8 an item. Limited to three items, categories include paintings, furniture, jewelry and decorative arts. The proceeds will benefit the Friends of Rock Hall Museum, located at 199 Broadway in Lawrence. Hadassah Games Day. Nassau Region of Hadassah's Tenth Annual Golf, Tennis and Games day will be held at the Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury, on Monday, September 11. All proceeds will benefit research in Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Gene Therapy at Hadassah Hospital. Participary donations are Golf, $360 (cart and caddy included); Tennis, $165; Cards and Games, $125 (including Duplicate Bridge); and Lunch only, $110. Voter Registration. Peninsula Section of National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, and Five Towns Jewish Council will hold a cooperative voter registration drive beginning August 16. It is essential that all eligible people register and vote. Documents proving eligibility (i.e.18 years of age by Election Day, and American Citizen) are required. People who will be away on Election Day and students attending out of town colleges who won't be coming home that day will need absentee ballots which will be available during this time. Flu Shots. The Five Towns Senior Center, located at 124 Franklin Place, Woodmere, is pleased to announce that flu shots will be given at the center on Wednesday, October 11, from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. to members of the community aged 65 and over. There is no out-of-pocket expense for this immunization. Senior citizens who wish to participate must register at the center and fill out a medical history form, after which they will be given an appointment.

Library News

Portraits: Van Gogh. Portraits by Van Gogh are the subject of several major exhibits that will be in museums across the country this year. Art historian Carol Dubs' colorful and exciting slides will illuminate the lives and works of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gaugin, focusing on the period that the artists worked together. The presentation on Van Gogh is at the H-W Library on September 7 at 2 P.M. Gaugin is Thursday, September 21 at 2 P.M.

Winter Planting. An informal "hands on" session for beginners on "Forcing Bulbs for Winter" will be offered at the Peninsula Public Library on Wednesday, September 13, at 1 P.M. Sherry Santifer, Professional Horticulturist, will lead the class. Everyone attending will take home a pot of bulbs. Participants are required to bring a 6" pot for planting; the library will supply all other materials free of charge. There are a limited number of spots available, so please call PPL at 239-3262 ext. 216, and speak to Gloria Pomerantz, Outreach Coordinator.

Play Discussions. Plays are often portrayals of families trying to resolve important life crises. Playwrights use their artform to show how critical issues affect relationships and how the family goes about reconciling conflicts. Herbert Goldstein's discussions of plays afford his audience an intellectually and emotionally rich experience. On Wednesday, September 13, 10:30 A.M. he will lead a discussion on "The Homecoming" by Harold Pinter. It is a "comedy of menace" about a family caught in a vortex of rage, sex, power and psychological collusion.

Women's Movement Discussion. Meet author Bonnie S. Anderson at the discussion of her book "The First International Women's Movement, 1830-1860" on Friday, September 15, at 10 A.M. at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. Even in its nascent stages during the 19th century, the feminist movement transcended national borders. Ms. Anderson's study of the early development spans three decades, beginning in 1830. Ms. Anderson is a professor at Brooklyn College.

Plainsong. Chronicling four generations of unsettled lives on the Colorado High Plains, Kent Haruf displays an emotional authority that rivals past masters of a classic American tradition. Linda Judenberg has led discussion groups at the Five Towns Senior Center of the Five Towns and throughout Nassau County. The program will take place at the Hewlett-Woodmere Library on Tuesday, September, 12, at 2 P.M.

The Young Israel of Woodmere offers a Torah study and beginner's prayer service class on Sunday mornings at 10:30. The synagogue is also holding a series of Hebrew reading classes for beginners on Wednesdays at 8 P.M. For further information and to register, one may call 295-0150.

Torah Seminars for Women. OU Torah Seminars for women are offered Sunday mornings at the West Side Institutional Synagogue on West 76th Street in Manhattan; Monday evenings at Congregation Adereth El on East 29th Street, also in Manhattan; and Tuesday evenings at the Young Israel of Woodmere, 859 Peninsula Boulevard. L.I.C.C. Training. Long Island Crisis Center is looking for volunteers. L..I.C.C. offers a 24/7 hotline, internet counseling seven days a week, 2 P.M. to 11 P.M. Call to set up an interview at 826-0244.

Bereavement Group. The Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA will be offering a Bereavement Group starting Tuesday, July 11, at 2 P.M. The objective of this six-week group is to provide support for the recently bereaved in a caring and warm atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths. This group will be held at the Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA, located at 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. A $40 pre-registration fee is required. For more info call 569-6733.

Chesed Organization. Kesher is a local youth-based chesed organization developed to promote acts of kindness in the community. They are currently collecting items in new or like new condition to distribute to those in need. Tax receipts are available upon request for all donations made. YM & YWHA Programs. The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA is happy to announce some wonderful programs for retired, enthusiastic adults. Shalom Club meets every Monday at 1 P.M. at the "Y," 207 Grove Avenue, Cedarhurst. The group begins with a Stretch and Flex Class followed by a wide variety of wonderful and informative programs. Golden Circle meets every Tuesday at 12 P.M. at Temple Beth El, Broadway and Locust, in Cedarhurst. Starting with refreshments and light exercise, this group always has interesting lectures or entertainment for all to enjoy.

The Five Towns Senior Center. Every Wednesday at 10 A.M. there will be a Drama Discussion led by Harold Engel. Every Thursday at 10 A.M. there will be a singing group led by Ruth Shuster. Basic Bridge Instruction will be on Wednesdays at 12:45 P.M. and led by Diane Goldstein.

5T Senior Center Classes. "Low Impact Exercise" will now be held on Friday mornings at 10 A.M., beginning September 8. Miriam Sharin returns on Tuesdays in September at 10 A.M. for her famous "Israeli Folk and Line Dance" class. "Mixed Media Painting" with Estelle Ginsburg will continue in September on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 A.M. "Beginning Drawing and Painting" with Jayne Saint Armour will begin on Monday, September 1, at 12:45 P.M. Beginners are welcome. "Bingo with Rosalie" join the fun Thursday mornings at 10 A.M., beginning September 7.

The Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA is beginning its fall programs for retired adults. Survivors of Suicide. The Survivors of Suicide group, a satellite chapter of The Compassionate Friends, meets the first Friday of every month at Zion Episcopal Church, 243-01 Northern Blvd. at 8 P.M. For more info call Ed and Marsha Simon at 295-6345.

Self-Help Group. A mental health community organization, helping people deal with fear, depression and anxiety, meets on Monday evenings at 8:15 P.M. at St. Joseph's Parish, 1346 Broadway, Hewlett.

Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island, Inc., in cooperation with the Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA, has formed "Tuesday Activity Center," a group for individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease and their spouses and families, at the " Y," 207 Grove Avenue in Cedarhurst, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. The purpose of the group is to allow a better understanding of Parkinson's, to learn about proper exercise, and to offer social interaction. For further information, contact Cathy Byrne at 569-6733.

Peninsula Counseling Center is offering a new program for adults with severe physical disabilities. "Out and About" brings physically disabled adults together on Thursdays for three hours of socializing, sharing ideas and discussion of a variety of topics. The group, which meets weekly at Temple Emanu-El in Lynbrook, is looking for new members as well as guest speakers.

Spanish-American War. Over 800 American young men were lost in the Spanish-American War. Were they Communists or anti-fascists? Why have they not been properly honored? Marvin D. Miller presents lectures on historical matters often overlooked by the community. He is a retired Social Studies teacher. For more info call 374-1967
