Hempstead Town triathlon. Saturday, September 9, 7:30 A.M. start, at Town Park, Point Lookout. The Town of Hempstead's triathlon athletic event - swimming, biking, running - sets competitors off for a three-quarter mile ocean swim, then a ten-mile bike race through Point Lookout and Lido Beach, then a five-mile run to the finish line back at Town Park. The event is limited to 300 contestants. Fees are $35 for a town resident, 18 to 59 years of age; $50 for a non-resident; and $17.50 for a senior town resident (ages 60 and over). Annual Mitzvah Fair. Sunday, Sept. 10, 9 A.M.-3 P.M., at Temple Israel of Long Beach, 120 Long Beach Blvd. Conducted every year for the whole community, the Mitzvah fair includes the services of a Sofer Sta'm (scribe), a Shatnez checker to test clothing for forbidden combination of linen and wool, and merchants selling goods for the upcoming holidays. Disabled adults support. September 14 next meeting. The St. Charles Hospital and Rehabiliation Center Auxiliary sponsors a monthly support group for men and women who are physically disabled. Weekly Depression Screening Long Beach Medical Center's Counseling Center is offering free, weekly walk-in screenings for persons experiencing depression. Long Beach Auxiliary Police. A recruitment drive for the Auxiliary Police is currently underway. Since 1940, The Long Beach Auxiliary Police have assisted the regular police department, serving as extra eyes and ears on the Long Beach streets and helping with traffic and crowd control during local emergencies and special events. Help rape/abuse survivors. The Nassau County Coaltion Against Domestic Violence will be training volunteers to become hospital emergency room advocates for survivors of rape/sexual assault survivors and victims of domestic violence. An 11-session course beginning in February will be offered evenings. Volunteers work on an on-call basis, reporting to emergency rooms during day, evening and weekend shifts to help provide support and information. Volunteers must have own transportation. Work with young people. Project Challenge's Tutoring After School Kids (TASK) needs people of all ages to help youngsters with homework, reading and math. "Grow-A-Row" for the needy. As you plant your vegetable gardens, consider planting an extra row to help those in need. Long Island Cares, the regional food bank, is sponsoring this program, encouraging gardeners to donate produce from your vegetable gardens to provide an importance source of nourishment for Long Island's hungry. Also needed are donated starter plants, fertilizer, and peat moss, as well as volunteers to help with others' gardens.
