Help rape/abuse survivors. The Nassau County Coaltion Against Domestic Violence will be training volunteers to become hospital emergency room advocates for survivors of rape/sexual assault survivors and victims of domestic violence. An 11-session course beginning in February will be offered evenings. Volunteers work on an on-call basis, reporting to emergency rooms during day, evening and weekend shifts to help provide support and information. Volunteers must have own transportation. "Grow-A-Row" for the needy. As you plant your vegetable gardens, consider planting an extra row to help those in need. Long Island Cares, the regional food bank, is sponsoring this program, encouraging gardeners to donate produce from your vegetable gardens to provide an importance source of nourishment for Long Island's hungry. Also needed are donated starter plants, fertilizer, and peat moss, as well as volunteers to help with others' gardens. Breast cancer support. The Long Beach Breast Cancer Coalition's "Lend a Helping Hand Program" is designed to provide women undergoing treatment for breast cancer with services to reduce some of the stresses of everday life. Services available include: house cleaning; transportation to/from treatment, meals delivered to the home, child care and day of beauty. After establishing qualifications, volunteers from the Coalition meet with a woman to discuss suggested services and review the various forms to be completed. Due to the extraordinary success of the Long Beach Auxiliary Police Department's drive for surplus, obsolete, or non-working cellular telephones with chargers and accessories, they are happy to announce they've raised more than they can use. Nightwatch Hotline. Long Beach Reach has a Nightwatch Hotline at 889-2332. It offers assistance to people coping with issues like depression, substance abuse, family conflicts and illness.
