Special Event
Bridge Committee Applicants. The Hewlett-Woodmere School District Bridge Committee is presently seeking applicants who are interested in serving on its board. The committee's sole purpose is to reach out to all the members of the community and to encourage participation in the acquisition of knowledge of the present work and future plans of the District 14 school system. There are presently three available openings on the board. Members are chosen to represent the diverse population of the community. If you are interested in serving on the board, please send a letter of your interest to the Bridge Committee, at One Johnson Place, Woodmere. Include some personal background data to help the committee with its selection. Letters of application must be submitted by August 15 and new members will be contacted in the Fall. All others letters will be filed for future use when openings become available.
Simply Stronger. The Peninsula Public Library is offering a free, four-session exercise class for older adults, entitled "Simply Stronger" on Thursdays, September 7, 14, 21, and October 5 from 1 P.M.-2 P.M. Registration is a must and will be taken at the library beginning on Thursday, August 10, at 9 A.M. Class is limited to the first 30 persons. District 15 residents are given preference until August 17. The class opens to all on August 18, if space permits. The participants will learn how to build muscular strength and endurance safely and effectively. The exercises are not strenuous.
Q and A on Medicaid. The Five Towns Senior Center, located at 124 Franklin Place, Woodmere, is pleased to announce a program concerning the legal needs of the aging population. On Friday, August 18, at 10 A.M., attorney Daniel Okrent will speak on "The Law and Your Money- an Overview." He is a member of the Nassau/Suffolk Law Services Committee, Inc. United Choral Society. The United Choral Society will begin the season with an open rehearsal at Hewlett-Woodmere Library, 1125 Broadway, Hewlett, on Tuesday, September 5. New singers, all voices, are Welcome. Subsequent rehearsals will be held at the #6 School, Peninsula Blvd. and Church St., Woodmere. The first concert, featuring "Vilvaldi's Gloria plus additional music, including Handel' s "Hallelujah Chorus" from Messiah, will take place on Tuesday, December 5. Hadassah Games Day. Nassau Region of Hadassah's Tenth Annual Golf, Tennis and Games day will be held at the Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury, on Monday, September 11. All proceeds will benefit research in Breast Cancer, Ovarian Cancer and Gene Therapy at Hadassah Hospital. Participary donations are Golf, $360 (cart and caddy included); Tennis, $165; Cards and Games, $125 (including Duplicate Bridge); and Lunch only, $110. Voter Registration. Peninsula Section of National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, and Five Towns Jewish Council will hold a cooperative voter registration drive beginning August 16. It is essential that all eligible people register and vote. Documents proving eligibility (i.e.18 years of age by Election Day, and American Citizen) are required. People who will be away on Election Day and students attending out of town colleges who won't be coming home that day will need absentee ballots which will be available during this time. Vocal Recital. Cantor Oreen Zeitlin, mezzo soprano, Soprano Mary Hurlbut and Flautist Andrew Bolotowsky will represent a song recital at Temple Israel of Lawrence on Thursday, August 31, at 7:30 P.M. They will present music by Vivaldi, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Saint Saens, Purcell and contemporary New York composer Elodie Lauten.
Flu Shots. The Five Towns Senior Center, located at 124 Franklin Place, Woodmere, is pleased to announce that flu shots will be given at the center on Wednesday, October 11, from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M. to members of the community aged 65 and over. There is no out-of-pocket expense for this immunization. Senior citizens who wish to participate must register at the center and fill out a medical history form, after which they will be given an appointment.
Library offers Flu Shot. The Peninsula Public Library will once again offer Flu and/or Pneumonia shots to seniors (60 years or older) at NO OUT OF POCKET EXPENSE. Registration at the library will be on Tuesday, October 3, from 9 A.M.-11 A.M. and in the evening from 6 P.M.-8 P.M. You must register to receive the shot. The inoculations will be administered at the library on Tuesday, October 10, 9 A.M.-12 noon under the supervision of licensed nurses, staff members of Nassau County Medical Center. As a community service, Peninsula Public Library, the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizens in cooperation with the Nassau County Medical Center are sponsoring this No Out Of Pocket Expense Immunization Program. H-W Library Art Gallery. Paintings by Jack Nodiff will be on display in the gallery of the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library from Saturday, September 9, through Thursday, October 26. Mr. Nodiff, a resident of East Rockaway, received degrees from New York University and Long Island University. He is listed in "Who's Who in American Art." Mr. Nodiff also studied art at the Brooklyn Museum, Five Towns Music and Arts Foundation and The Art Students League. His paintings are primarily representational, specializing in beach scenes, seascapes and landscapes. His works have appeared at the Salmagundi Club as well as in many museums and galleries. Spanish-American War. Over 800 American young men were lost in the Spanish-American War. Were they Communists or anti-fascists? Why have they not been properly honored? Marvin D. An Evening of Early Jazz. A program of classic jazz including compositions by Louis Armstrong, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton, will be presented on August 17, at 7:30 P.M. at the H-W Library. Performing will be one of America's most acclaimed jazz bands, David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band, with David Ostwald on tuba, Randy Reinhart on trumpet, Frank Vignola on piano and guitar and Dan Levinson on sax and clarinet. David Ostwald leads the Gully Low Jazz Band, whose recording with blues great Big Joe Turner earned the group a Grammy nomination in 1986.
Early Jazz into Swing. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library will be presenting a lecture on the transitional years of Jazz music. In the years between 1925 and 1930, the development of America's most unique music, Jazz, underwent a dramatic and most significant transition. The change resulted in an entirely new form of music called "swing." "Swing" saw the formation of large ensembles, a new danceable rhythmic structure and the power of radio and national attention. It also heralded the emergence of a proud African-American style reflective of the Harlem Renaissance in the arts, and much more. Herbert A. Deutsch is the Department Chairman and a Professor of Music at Hofstra University. His lecture will include representative recordings and live performance. For more info call 374-1967.

Advanced Hebrew. Hadassah is offering advanced classes for those who already can read and write in Hebrew. Bereavement Group. The Greater Five Towns YM and YWHA will be offering a Bereavement Group starting Tuesday, July 11, at 2 P.M. The objective of this six-week group is to provide support for the recently bereaved in a caring and warm atmosphere. There will be the opportunity to work through grief, examine feelings and discover inner strengths. Chesed Organization. Kesher is a local youth-based chesed organization developed to promote acts of kindness in the community. Parkinson's Support Group Foundation of Long Island, Inc., in cooperation with the Greater Five Towns YM & YWHA, has formed "Tuesday Activity Center," a group for individuals suffering from Parkinson's disease and their spouses and families, to be held at the " Y," 207 Grove Avenue in Cedarhurst, from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. Peninsula Counseling Center is offering a new program for adults with severe physical disabilities. "Out and About" brings physically disabled adults together on Thursdays for three hours of socializing, sharing ideas and discussion of a variety of topics. The group, which meets weekly at Temple Emanu-El in Lynbrook, is looking for new members as well as guest speakers.
H-W Library Summer Hours. The Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library began its summer schedule on July 1. The library's hours of service will be Monday through Thursday, 9 A.M. to 9 P.M.; Friday, 9 A.M. through 6 P.M.; and Saturday, 9 A.M. through 5 P.M. The library will be closed on Sundays.
