Elmont Board of Education
The board’s next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 12 at Clara H. Carlson School at 8 p.m. The following meeting, on Tuesday, May 19 at Elmont Road School, will be a budget vote. It will start at 9 p.m.
Sewanhaka Central High School
The Board of Education will hold its next regular meeting on Tuesday, April 28 at Sewanhaka High School at 8 p.m.
Valley Stream District 13
The Board of Education will hold its next regular business meeting on Tuesday, May 19 at the James A. Dever School at 8 p.m.
Elmont Library Board
The Board of Trustees will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday, April 23. An executive session begins at 7 p.m., followed by the public meeting at 8 p.m.
Franklin Square Library Board
The Board of Trustees will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, April 28 at 7 p.m. A library board election will be held the next day.
Franklin Square Chamber
The Chamber of Commerce will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, May 20 at 6 p.m. at Filomena’s.
Retirees meeting
The Franklin Square Jewish Center Retirees Group will meet on Tuesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m.
Elmont East End Civic
The Elmont East End Civic Association will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Laura Mallay of Residents for Efficient Special Taxing Districts.

Adult education
Rabbi Kehati’s Adult Education Classes at the Temple B’Nai Israel of Elmont will be held until Monday, May 11. Classes will start at 7:30 p.m. The topic of discussion is The Definition of Judaism According to the Prophets and Rabbinical Literature. This class is free of charge.
Supermarket Bingo
The Confraternity of Christian Mothers of St. Catherine of Sienna Parish is holding Supermarket Bingo on Friday, May 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the parish. Admission is $5. Call (516)-437-7599 for more information.
Beer Tasting
The Plattduetsche Park Restaurant in Franklin Square will host another beer tasting dinners on Friday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. Six food courses will be paired with complementary beers from the Weihenstephan brewery for a memorable dining experience.
Springtime Victorian Tea
On Saturday, April 25, the Rosary-Altar Society at the St. Vincent de Paul Church in Elmont will hold its annual Springtime Victorian Tea. This year, there will be two seatings, one from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and one from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The tea will be held in the Fr. Hickey meeting room of the rectory, located at 1500 De Paul Street in Elmont. Participation requires a donation of $14, seating is limited, so call by April 20 to register. 352-5570 or 328-0547.
Run For The Police
Residents are invited to register for the annual Long Island Police Appreciation Run, taking place in Eisenhower Park on Thursday, June 11. The entry fee for the Run is $20 for those who enter in advance and $25 for those who enter on the day of the run. Home Fires
The BroadHollow Theatre in Elmont will open its production of “Home Fires” on Saturday, April 18. The play is the story of a Texas mother trying to raise her children during World War Two. The show will run until May 3. Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for seniors, $18 for students, and $14 for youths under 16. Student rush tickets will also be available.

Chair exercise
The next class will be held on Friday, May 1 at 10 a.m. with instructor Millie Danko.
Chair Yoga
On Monday, May 4 at 1 p.m. join the library and its patrons for yoga. This is a class suitable for all levels and will help participants learn how to listen to their bodies with gentle stretching and breathing.
Computer Third Grade
A computer workshop for adults will be held on Saturday, April 25 at 10 a.m. This hands-on workshop covers multitasking, working with graphics and using Windows drawing and painting tools. Also being covered will be using copy and paste within a document, to another document in the same and another application.
Book Discussion
Librarian Anthony Grimaldi will lead a discussion of “Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society,” by Mary Ann Shaffe on Monday, April 27 at 2 p.m. Coffee and cookies will be served.
Tuesday feature film
“August Rush will be shown on May 5 at 2 p.m. A musical prodigy searches for his parents both in this world and the next using music as his vehicle of communication and encountering the homeless as well as the haunted. The movie is rated PG.
Poetry Workshop
Wednesday, April 30 from 4:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Published poet Dr. Lynda Opyr is the author of five collections of poetry that have been published in numerous journals and magazines. Participants in the workshop will have the opportunity to write poetry and share what they’ve written.
Seven Instruments and Voice
On Sunday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. Naomi & Joel will return Elmont Library with seven instruments and voice, and they will perform two shows, focusing on crooners and Big Band-era music. They will bring along Sing-Along Sheets and teach everyone how to croon. Admission is free.
Chi Gong
The next class will be held on Thursday, April 23 at 10 a.m. with instructor Cathy Anastasio.
Bridge With Mimi
Intermediate level classes are held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. This is not a beginner’s class — you must have experience in playing the game.

Afternoon movie
A movie will be shown every Thursday at 2 p.m. The movie schedule is as follows: “Fanny” April 23.
Artwork on display
Franklin Square Public Schools and the Franklin Square Public Library have joined together to honor student artists from the community. Art projects created by K-6 students from John Street School, Polk Street School and Washington Street School will be on display in the library from Wednesday, April 29, to Wednesday, May 6. There will be a special preview on April 29 at 3:15 p.m.
Music of Sondheim
On Sunday, May 3, at 2:00 p.m. let Jack Schnur entertain you with his program on Stephen Sondheim. Mr. Schnur will sing some of his favorite Sondheim songs and there will be clips from many of his shows and film versions featuring performers such as: Ethel Merman, Liza Minelli, Julie Andrews, Judy Garland, Bernadette Peters, Elaine Strich and others.
Exercise Class
On Tuesday, April 28, at 10:30 a.m. the library will be holding a low-impact exercise class. Come learn some easy low-impact exercises to improve posture, balance, breathing, range of motion, and body flexibility.

On Thursday, April 30 at 7:00 p.m. let Angela DePalma show you how to make a beautiful hand dyed silk scarf.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program
This program aims to help individuals and families recover from the ravages of substance abuse Group and individual therapy sessions, adult and adolescent treatment are available at Peninsula’s Counseling’s Valley Stream location, 70 W. Project Cares
This social day program is for men and women 60 and over who are considered frail due to physical or mental difficulties. The group meets Monday through Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church School Building, Broadway, Hewlett. For information call (516) 374-9278.
