Help for Haiti

The Rockville Centre/Lakeview Economic Opportunity Council’s Youth Interaction Council is hosting a bake sale for Haiti at EOC headquarters, 140 N. Centre Ave., from 4-6 p.m. on Jan. 22.

Financial Workshop

The Rockville Centre/Lakeview Economic Oportunity Council, 140 N. Centre Ave. is sponsoring a workshop for youth and adults requiring financial assistance from 4-5 p.m. on Jan. 22.

Winter Exhibit at Phillips House

The Museum of Rockville Centre's winter exhibit at the Phillips House, 28 Hempstead Ave., is American cut glass (from the Brilliant Period of the mid-to-late 1800s), pressed and cranberry glass from the mid-19th and early 20th centuries. Examples of cranberry glass include a rare whale oil lamp cut to clear and an eight-sided French perfume bottle   There are several variety of vases, candy dishes and baskets and a unique paneled sugar shaker. These pieces are uniquely displayed with cut crystal bowls, vases and Victorian napkin rings. The museum is open from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and by appointment.  Call (516) 764 -7459 for further information. The museum has no entry fee.

Tree of Life Yoga Program

Central Synagogue of Nassau County, 430 DeMott Ave. is sponsoring a winter-mini session, with daytime and evening classes of yoga. The classes are open to yoga students of all levels.The Tree of Life Yoga Program will be offering a series of five classes each on Tuesday evenings, that began on Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday mornings, that started on Jan. 13 at 9:30 a.m. Each series of classes is available for $60 or you may pay as you go for $15 a class. Members of the community are invited to participate. Newcomers Club 

The club is sponsoring a couples event hosted by 5th Avenue Chocolatiere on Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. at its new factory and shop at 396 Rockaway Ave., Valley Stream. Come satisfy your sweet tooth. The price per couple is $30 for members and $35 for non-members. It includes light appetizers; dipping fresh fruit in the chocolate dipping fountain; truffles and a wide variety of other samples of fine chocolates. RVC Democratic Club

On Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m., the Rockville Centre Democratic Club will hold an open meeting at the Sandel Center, 50 South Park Ave. The topic will be: “Election 2009 and the Future for Democrats in the New Decade.” Jay Jacobs, chairman of the Nassau County and the New York State Democratic Committees, will review the voter statistics from the election and explore some of the factors that might have influenced the outcome in Nassau County this past November and how those factors might be addressed in 2010. Everyone who is interested in how the political process works is invited to attend the meeting. Students, both high school and college level, are especially welcome.They'll have an opportunity to exchange ideas with one of the real “movers and shakers” of New York State politics. Membership in the Democratic Club is not required.

“Your Taxes” with Donald X. Clavin, Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes

On Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Public Library, Clavin returns to discus everything you always wanted to know about your tax bill including how to grieve your tax assessment.

Free flu clinic

On Jan. 29, between 6 and 10 p.m. at the Rockville Centre Recreation Center, 111 N. Oceanside Road, Sen. Dean Skelos will host an H1N1 influenza vaccination program with the assistance of the Nassau Health Care Corporation. If you have any questions, call Skelos' District Office at (516) 766-8383.

Fortnightly Club

On Feb. 2 the Fortnightly Club welcomes back Pianist, Jun Luc Foster, an audience favorite. The meeting and program will take place at 1:3o p.m. at St. Mark's Methodist Church on Hempstead Avenue. Refresh-ments will be served.

Newcomers Club

Cooking Class with Heather West — a women's event. Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. Hosted by Monterey Restaurant, 20 West Park Avenue, Long Beach. Assessment Grievance Workshop

On Feb. 3 from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Rockville Centre Public Library, Nassau County Legislator Joseph Scannell invites his constituents to attend his “Assessment Grievance Workshop.” Scannell has arranged to have representatives from the Nassau County Assessment Department to be available to assist residents in completing the Tax Assessment Grievance forms. The deadline for filing a grievance is March 1, 2010. For more information call Scannell’s office at (516) 571-6205.

St. Agnes Gala Ball

St. Agnes Cathedral School invites the community to its 2010 Gala Ball at the Garden City Hotel on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. This year’s honorees are Salvatore LaMonica and Cara DeRostaing Cahill, for their support of and commitment to Catholic Education. Rec Center Nursery School registration

Registrations are now being accepted for the RVC Recreation Center’s Nursery School programs fro the 2010-11 school year. Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2011 are offered five days a week from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday frp, 12:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Pre-Pre-K classes for those entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are offered Monday through Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or Tuesday and Thursday from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. To schedule an appointment to visit the school, call the Recreation Center office at (516) 678-9338.

Connor and Friends

One Sunday a month from 2:30-4 p.m., trained recreation personnel provide a fun and safe activity environment for children with special needs, including autism and Down Syndrome. These playdates, scheduled for Jan. 24, Feb. 28 and March 21, must be reserved with Paul Lawless at MPLawless@verizon.net.

Scavenger Hunt

Jan 22 at 1 p.m. Divided into teams, participants will search for treasures on the “Scavenger List.” $4 pp ($8.00 day of event).

Tuesday Topics

Sandel Senior Men’s Club

The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m. for breakfast and business. At 11 a.m., when available, guest speakers discuss topics of interest to men. A variety of trips and programs are scheduled for July and August.

Lions Recycle

The Sandel Center is now an official drop-off point for used or broken prescription eyeglasses, non-prescription sunglasses, old hearing aids and old cell phones. Donations can be brought in on Monday - Friday from 9 to 5.

Social Work Services

Social Work supervisor Wendy Weinstock, MSW, is available for private consultation on a range of Social Work services such as housing and transportation as well as individual and group counseling. Call Wendy at 516-536-1162 for an appointment.

Religious Events

Special Needs Mass

The Parish of St. Agnes welcomes all to its monthly Mass for special needs children of all ages and their families. The next Mass is on Jan. 23. These Masses are held on Saturdays at 5 p.m. in the Lower Hall of the Msgr. Melton Auditorium which is handicapped accessible through the Parish Center.
