Knights of Pythias The Knights of Pythias Alliance-East Meadow Lodge 774 is seeking new members to join its ranks. This non-sectarian organization serves the community through a number of altruistic endeavors, including food baskets for the needy, donations to charitable organizations, anti-drug programs, and a host of other activities. Sons of Italy The East Meadow local lodge, Edward J. Speno Lodge No. 2568, are calling on Italians and Italian Americans to join the largest men and women organization in America, the Order of Sons of Italy in America. This co-ed local lodge meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish school of culture center, 574 East Meadow Ave. in East Meadow. Flu shots The East Meadow Public Library is offering flu shots for those age 60 and over under the auspices of the Nassau County Department of Health and Department of Senior Citizen Affairs in cooperation with Nassau University Medical Center. The shots will be given on Friday, Dec. 5 by appointment only. Appointments are handed out in order and cannot be changed. Registration on a first come first served basis.
Sunday summer concerts You asked the library for folksingers - so they went out and found two of the best. Kevin, a former East Meadow resident, and Carol Becker are founding members of the prestigious Hudson Valley Folk Guild. Their performances exude the warmth of our music. They will share favorite familiar and rare folk songs to be enjoyed by the entire family at the East Meadow Public Library. Come and share our musical legacy with them. Reservations open. Admission is free. All are welcome.
Bus trip The exhibition will present new insight into Van Gogh's depictions of night landscapes, interior scenes, and the effects of both gaslight and natural light on their surroundings. The trip brings you to the Museum of Modern Art for a guided tour of the Van Gogh Show and other exhibits on Wednesday, Dec. 10. Then off to Rockefeller Center to see the tree. The bus will be leaving at 7:30 a.m. to leave time for traffic for the tour at 9:30 a.m. You will have time to shop and have lunch on your own in Rockefeller Center. Ticket price of $70 includes admissions to MOMA, Van Gogh, transportation, taxes, and gratuities. Walking is throughout MOMA and Rockefeller Center at your own discretion. Christmas Concert Holy Trinity Orthodox Church will present a Christmas Concert on Saturday, December 6 at 7:00 PM. The Church Choir will perform choral music of the Orthodox Church and traditional carols from both East and West. A Lenten reception will follow the concert. Yoga classes at the East Meadow Jewish Center, 1400 Prospect Avenue. Join their relaxing yoga classes for women on Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No experience needed. Bring a mat and make some time. The cost is $25 for five sessions and $6 for individual sessions. Tree and Menorah lighting sponsored by the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Park at Town Square.
Holiday lighting sponsored by CASA on Dec. 12 at 4 p.m. at Town Park on Carman Avenue, next to the Carvel. The Clarke High School chorus will perform, and the East Meadow Fire Department will appear along with Santa and his elves.
Support groups
Alzheimer's support The Bristal Assisted Living, 40 Merrick Ave., hosts an Alzheimer's disease support group for caregivers every second Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Call Pat Kiley at (516) 918-4009 to register.
Helping relatives of addicts Relatives and friends who are suffering as a result of a loved one's battle with addition can now receive support via a hotline run by the Long Island Crisis Center, at (516) 481-4000.
Substance help Alcoholics Anonymous meetings held Thursdays and Sundays in the school cafeteria of St. Barnabas Church in Bellmore. All meetings start at 7:30 p.m.
Support for moms. The Sunrise Mothers' Center, a member-run, non-sectarian, non-profit organization in Bellmore, is dedicated to supporting the needs and experiences of mothers. The center provides discussion groups with child care on premises, active committee work, book groups, social activities for parents and children, and speakers on various topics.

Crisis counseling. The Long Island Crisis Center offers 24-hour/seven-day-a-week crisis intervention counseling. Anyone who is depressed, needs help in controlling teenagers or wants to beat an addiction is encouraged to call (516) 679-1111. Calls are free and anonymous.
Overeaters Anonymous is held on Tuesdays from 7:45 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Salisbury Park on Salisbury Park Drive in East Meadow. Overeaters Anonymous offers mutual support and fellowship for those recovering from compulsive overeating. Everyone is welcome! For more information, call (516) 997-4534.
Help for smokers. The Nassau County Department of Health, in collaboration with the New York State Smokers' Quitline, is sponsoring a program which offers four weeks of nicotine replacement therapy for smokers who want to quit. The therapy also known as "the patch" is available to medically-eligible county residents at no cost. Residents should call the New York Smokers' Quitline at 1-866-697-8487.
