Bossart, of the Concerned Citizens party, defeated Andrew Karamouzis of Residents' Voice, 3,049 votes to 2,163, in unofficial results issued Tuesday night by the village. A village official characterized the turnout as heavy, with nearly 30 percent of registered voters casting ballots.
Two trustee seats were up for grabs as well. Charles Joyce of Concerned Citizens captured one, with 2,874 votes, and David Krasula, also of Concerned Citizens, took the second seat with 2,797 votes. They defeated the one-year incumbent, Suzanne Murphy Sullivan of Residents' Voice, and Ralph Bumbaca of the same party, who received 2,415 and 2,253 votes, respectively.
With the victory of the three Concerned Citizens candidates, the Residents' Voice party loses its 3-2 majority on the village board. Karamouzis, however, will retain his trustee seat, beside Residents' Voice colleague Jeanne Mulry.
William J. Croutier Jr., who ran unopposed, was elected to be the new village justice with 3,181 votes.
"I am very happy that all the voters came out and had their say," Bossart said. "It shows a very clear determination to go in a more civil direction, and I look forward to working with my colleagues from Residents' Voice."
Bossart, a 40-year resident of the village who served as a trustee for eight years, said she was not surprised by the turnout but she was surprised by her margin of victory.
"I feel good that the people in the village supported the things we believe in," said Joyce, who was making his first foray into village politics.
"It's a great feeling to have the trust and confidence of the people in the village," Krasula said of his party's victory. "It's a good feeling to run with two exceptional people, and we plan to keep our promises and commitments that we made to our neighbors."
Throughout the heated campaign, both parties spoke out against overdevelopment in the village, and addressed parking concerns as well. The Concerned Citizens Party promised to bring civility back to the village board.
