A suspect jumped out of a moving vehicle in Long Beach on Dec. 28 after police said he refused to stop when officers caught him speeding.

According to Deputy Inspector Bruce Meyer of the Long Beach Police Department, Nassau County police were attempting to stop a vehicle for speeding in Island Park.

Nassau County Police said the incident took place at 10 p.m., as the suspect drove south on Austin Boulevard in a 2006 Nissan. Police said the incident began when an officer observed the suspect speeding.

The suspect, who came into Long Beach, refused to pull over, Meyer said, as he drove over the Long Beach Bridge.

“The Long Beach Police Department received notification requesting assistance from Nassau County police,” Meyer said. “Long Beach provided backup.”

Meyer said that Nassau County police pursued the driver on East Fulton Street, when the suspect abruptly abandoned his vehicle.

“As the car was moving, he actually jumped out,” said Meyer. “The vehicle he was driving actually kept going and it crashed into a parked vehicle.”

Meyer said that 4th Precinct and Long Beach police officers chased the suspect on foot through the snow in the North Park area, where, eventually, the pursuit ended.

Police said the suspect fled the scene. No injuries were reported. A Nassau County Police Department spokeswoman said that the investigation is ongoing.

Meyer said he believed that the snow from the recent blizzard that rocked Long Beach on Dec. 26 and 27 hurt police efforts in their chase with the suspect.

“Do I think it hindered their efforts? Yes,” said Meyer. [But] they made their best effort. They always do.”
