Cyclones unbeaten in last six

Junior Mike Marano’s goal with 14 minutes remaining earned visiting South Side a 2-2 tie with Garden City last Friday in a Nassau Conference ABC-I boys’ soccer game.

The Cyclones stretched their unbeaten streak to six games dating back to a 2-0 loss to the undefeated Trojans on Sept. 21. A pair of freshmen hooked up for South Side’s first goal when Kyle Morrisey converted a pass from Mark Romanowski. James Mignon scored twice in the first half for Garden City, which maintained the top spot in the conference with a record of 6-0-2.

“We’ll take it, but it’s a game we should’ve won,” Cyclones coach Fred Paul said. “I like the way we battled back from behind not once but twice. We put ourselves in position to win. We’ll take a lot of positives from it and move on.”

As far as deadlocks, South Side’s been-there, done-that. It has two wins, two losses and four ties in eight conference games and also battled Baldwin and Valley Stream North to scoreless ties in non-league action. “We’re in a tough conference,” Paul said. “We’re definitely a better team than we were three weeks ago. Our lineup is settled and we’re stringing passes together and moving the ball well.”

Recent position changes seem to be paying off. Romanowski (one goal, three assists) moved from the midfield to join Marano (three goals) at forward and the offense has produced six goals in the last five conference games. “Mark sees the field really well and he’s taken some pressure off Mike,” Paul said. “They’re confident in each other and make us a threat to score at any point we’re on the attack.”
