"Robert Kaufman took deposits totaling $33,195 from 18 homeowners without performing the contracted door installation work for each homeowner," said Dillon. "Our investigation commenced in January 2004, as a result of complaints filed with the district attorney's Criminal Complaint Unit and the Nassau County Office of Consumer Affairs. Kaufman has been accused by these complainants of taking deposits without performing any work."
According to the district attorney's office, Doors By Design Ltd. had its license suspended by Consumer Affairs on Jan. 8, but allegedly took deposits for work after that suspension.
"On May 28, the Consumer Affairs Bureau referred two additional complaints against Robert Kaufman, Doors By Design, to our office," said Dillon. "Kaufman entered into these contracts after the suspension of his company's license."
According to a press release from Dillon, "Kaufman had informed Consumer Affairs that as of March 3, Doors By Design was out of business."
Kaufman was arraigned in District Court in Hempstead on Nov. 10, and released on his own recognizance. His attorney, Joseph Trainor, was unavailable for comment.
