Only in recent years did New York state mandate that defibrillators be available in all schools. Saul Lerner, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District athletic director, said Mepham has three or four defibrillators. "This is the first time that a defibrillator was used at Mepham," said Lerner. "It saved a man's life. How much better could it be?"
