When Jules Abramson decided to moved his factory to Freeport last year because the business had outgrown its Rockville Centre location, it didn't take him long to decide what should take its place a Bramson House Hotel.
The hotel, which will be built by Abramson Hospitality, is scheduled to open in March 2003 and will be managed by Hilton.
Five Nassau Street, located just west of King Kullen off the Sunrise Highway ramp to Merrick Road, was the home of the Bramson House's factory for 21 years. Before that it was a bowling alley.
It's going to be a magnificent project, like a New York City hotel, said Abramson, a 25-year resident of Rockville Centre.
The four-story, high-end hotel will have 85 rooms, about 25 percent of those being suites. It should provide about 30 jobs to the Rockville Centre community.
I think it's going to bring in more people [to Rockville Centre] and will bring people into the downtown area, said Gary Schwartz, president of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce.
While the village already has two hotels, the Holiday Inn and The Diplomat both on Sunrise Highway, Abramson feels there is room for one more. A professional hotel firm performed a study for Abramson that showed that Nassau County is a market for hotels with modern accommodations.
Glass elevators, marble baths, an atrium and a gym will all be a part of the interior design of the hotel. There will also be the Bramson House signature upholstery, draperies, and bedding, which can be seen in such hotels as the Plaza in Manhattan, the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and the Outrigger in Hawaii.
We love the town, said Abramson, as to why he wanted to build a hotel in Rockville Centre.
