Denenberg announces environmental projects

Posted
Denenberg, who is up for re-election on Tuesday, began by giving journalists a tour of a construction site on a quiet side street off Newbridge Road in Bellmore, where the county is installing a hydrodynamic separator. The underground machine uses centrifugal force to siphon off pesticides, herbicides and heavy metals that wash through storm drains into the bays that hug the South Shore.
In south Merrick, Denenberg then announced that the county had acquired an acre and a half of wetlands off Elliot Street through a tax-lien sale. Denenberg said the property cost the county thousands, not hundreds of thousands, of dollars, and explained that the land would be perpetually preserved, preventing development.
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, a Democrat from Glen Cove, appeared with Denenberg to make the announcement. Joining them were members of the South Merrick Community Civic Association and SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save Harbors), a Freeport-based nonprofit organization that collects garbage from local wetlands and educates the public about myriad environmental issues.
