DeNiro fizzles while Long Beach sizzles No stars for film in locals' eyes

After its debut last Friday, the film City by The Sea had some local movie-goers shocked at the poor portrayal of Long Beach and the actual crime the movie is based on.
It was such an inaccurate portrayal of Long Beach, Stacey Russo said after the movie. Dilapidated buildings, peep shows, graffiti-ridden buildings...they didn't show one nice thing about Long Beach.
Russo felt that they changed so many things in the movie, Why not change the name of the town, too?
The portrayal was so off about Long Beach, her sister Jen said, I didn't know that I lived in Far Rockaway. I thought I lived in Long Beach.
Like many movie-goers at the Long Beach Cinema 4 that night, the Russos believed Long Beach was shown in the worst way possible.
While the description of Long Beach was less than favorable, Mark Gillette was even harsher with his review, calling the movie a slow bludgeoning death.
Meanwhile, George Moulinos said he understands why the depiction of Long Beach needed to be bad. The portrayal of Long Beach was very exaggerated, he said, but added he feels it was mainly done for the effect.
Still, many residents worry about what out-of-town people will think of Long Beach after they see the movie.
For the people from out-of-town, who don't know Long Beach, they would think that Long Beach is a bad place, Dave Gallo said.
And his friend Adam Piervincenzi agreed.
It gave a poor image, he said. If I was from Minnesota, I would never want to come here.
