Deputy county exec says protests 'premature'

"We're exploring a whole series of options related to the First Precinct," Driscoll said. "We don't have a current plan to move anything."
Driscoll enumerated four objectives the county has in relation to the precinct: to update the First Precinct, the oldest in the county; to revitalize both Grand Avenue in Baldwin and Nassau Road in Roosevelt; and to enhance public safety in both communities.
On Oct. 6th, a crowd of about 500 protested the proposal at a rally organized by Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Councilman Anthony Santino. On Sept. 21, a crowd of about 100 protested outside the Merrick Road precinct house.
Driscoll's statement seems to signal a shift in the County government's position. A July 15th letter sent by County Executive Thomas J. Suozzi to Murray, inquired about acquiring property, 380 Nassau Road, from the Town of Hempstead, "to relocate and build a new First Precinct for the Nassau County Police Department."
