The program gives college students a firsthand opportunity to decide whether a career as a physician may be right for them. Coordinated by Dr. Ira Klonsky, Franklin's Medical Director, the program lasts four weeks and allows students to observe the medical field through department rotations. Students visit and learn about the OR, Emergency Department, Radiology and Lab. Daily lectures are given by physicians to the students and doctors spend time with them, which gives insight into the life of a doctor.Students who want to apply for the 2007 program should visit Franklin's Web site at www.NorthShoreLIJ.com.
New York Jets take on Mercy
Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre was recently visited by 25 new recruits from the New York Jets. The players met with patients and staff and toured areas of the hospital such as the Emergency Department and the Mother/Baby Unit. The visit was part of the Jets' Player Development Program, which helps to develop the players on and off the field. Community service and fostering responsibilty are integral parts of the program."I believe, and I know many of the other younger players that are new to the Jets, feel that it's very important to be positive role models and have an impact in the worthwhile community projects," said first-round draft Nick Mangold, who recently graduated from Ohio State University. Mercy Medical Center is a 387-bed, not-for-profit medical center and level II trauma center serving the healthcare needs of the residents of Nassau County and the surrounding area.
