District 24 students take field trip to the Ashokan

Posted

Valley Stream 24 sixth graders ventured to the Ashokan Center for an overnight field trip. The Ashokan Center is a retreat center in the Catskills replete with hiking trails, pristine wilderness, waterfalls, and steam-fed ponds, offering students an educational experience in nature since 2008.

While on the field trip, students learned about the natural features of the area and the importance of respecting the environment. The students worked together to prepare meals and embarked into the great outdoors. They were also given a presentation on wild birds of prey and enjoyed a campfire sing-along while writing their own lyrics about their experiences and feelings during the overnight trip. They also had the opportunity to make newfound connections with students from all three elementary schools: Brooklyn Avenue Elementary, William L. Buck Elementary, and Robert W. Carbonaro.
