The Friends of Bridge substance abuse counseling organization awarded $100 scholarships to three District 24 students on May 25 for essays that discussed the dangers of substance abuse and how to avoid them.

The winners were Isabella Viscarra, of Robert W. Carbonaro School; Liana Ferguson, of Brooklyn Avenue School; and Alesandra Ascurruz, of William L. Buck School.

The Diana Pirrone Memorial Essay contest was established in memory of the former principal of William L. Buck School who went on to become an assistant superintendent until she retired in October 2003. Pirrone was on the Friends of Bridge board for five years and was active in local organizations.
