"We looked around the area, and we couldn't find where the dog was located," said Steve Turman, a lawyer from Bellmore and friend of Denenberg's who accompanied him to the park that day. "We were scared it was stuck in a filtration system."
After some searching, Max, the lost dog of John Amaruso, a resident who lives nearby, was discovered under the dock between Cammans Pond and a canal leading to Merrick Bay. The dog, a Belgian Tervuren that had been missing since March 17, was pinned between debris and a concrete wall, Turman said.
"The only way to get the dog was to go into the water," said Turman, who put on what he described as half of a too-tight wet suit that a neighbor had brought from home. After a few minutes of struggling with debris in the water, Turman rescued the wet pet, reuniting him with its owner. Amaruso said the dog was fine.
