Joe Doyle, a Bruins offensive lineman, was given his last opportunity to play a high school football game and went out a winner as Long Island topped New York City, 31-14. Doyles last game for Baldwin was an upset loss to Hempstead in the opening round of the Nassau Conference I playoffs.
It was an awesome experience, Doyle said. Playing with some of the best from Nassau and Suffolk and to be able to beat [New York City], it is an unbelievable way to end my high school career.
Doyles accomplishments from his time in a Baldwin uniform will not be forgotten any time soon. According to Athletic Director Ed Ramirez, Doyle is the epitome of what a Baldwin athlete should be. The success he had is a testament to the hard work he puts in during the off-season, Ramirez said. He set a standard for lineman; hopefully the younger athletes in our programs realize that the hard work does pay off.
Next year, Doyle will dawn a SUNY-Cortland Red Dragons uniform. In order for him to earn some playing time in his first season, he understands that a lot of hard work and sacrifice is in order. They have some big boys up there, Doyle said. There is definitely some weight and agility training for me to do. I would love to start right off the bat. If not, Im going to have some great role models up at
Cortland, theyve got some great lineman and Im really looking forward to it.
Though Doyles career at Baldwin is officially over, he said one aspect of
football will help him later on in life.
Teamwork, he said. The friends you make, the bonds you build, they are going to last forever.
