The suspect, identified as Peter Vono of Nebraska Street, was driving his 1988 Jeep south on Austin Boulevard, near Georgia Avenue, on July 22 at 7:10 p.m., when he veered into the northbound lanes and struck a 2002 Buick, according to county homicide detectives.
As the car driven by Vono was bearing down on him, the 57-year-old driver of the Buick tried to avoid the collision and struck a 2007 Hyundai driven by a 48-year-old man, police said. Both of those drivers escaped injury, police said.
But Vono¹s vehicle continued to move south in the opposite lanes of traffic, slamming into a 2002 Mercedes Benz and a 1991 Mazda. The driver of the Mazda, a 50-year-old woman, was listed in critical condition, while her 50-year-old female passenger and the 73-year-old female driver of the Mercedes were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Vono was arrested and charged with second-degree vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated (drugs) and driving while impaired with alcohol. He was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on July 23.
