"We are here not only to honor 50 years of service to the Elmont community," proclaimed Principal Walter Aksionoff, "but to celebrate our new wing, and the hope that Elmont will grow and prosper in years to come." He then acknowledged two former principals in attendance, Robert Molloy (1956-1966) and Dr. John Biot (1970-1989).
"I've been here practically since the school opened," mused third grade teacher Jane Lombardi, who graduated Dutch Broadway in 1962, "so this is coming full circle for me." PTA President Elizabeth Allen and Vice President Sandra Smith offered an overview of the organization's objectives, which include "bringing the home and the school into a closer relationship."
The Student Council took a few moments out of the festivities to honor the veterans of Elmont VFW Post 455 with a recitation of the Gettysburg Address. "We have learned an important lesson this year," said Student Council President Ian Feurtado. "We have learned the importance of freedom, and how fortunate we are to live in a nation that provides opportunities for each of us to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." First and third graders provided an entertaining trip down memory lane, which included the Jackson Five dance review, the 1950s living time line, a number from Seussical, and the songs "Singing in the Rain," "All Shook Up," "LaBamba," and "Tutti Frutti." The band and chorus also performed.
