Earth ‘Week’ at Molloy

The Sustainability Institute at Molloy College will host a variety of special events in honor of Earth Week 2010. Programs and workshops, all with a focus on the global water crisis, will take place on Molloy’s Rockville Centre campus during the week of April 19. All events are open to the public. The event schedule is:

Earth Week Flag Raising Ceremony

April 19, 10 a.m., Front of Kellenberg Hall

Molloy College President Dr. Drew Bogner will kick-off the week’s events with opening remarks. Musical selections will be performed by members of Molloy’s Music Department. Additionally, a water-themed mural designed by Molloy art students especially for the Earth Week celebration will be dedicated during the ceremony.

Flaherty, Catholic Relief Services

April 19, 12:15 p.m.-1:45 p.m., Reception Room, Kellenberg Hall. Sister Flaherty will speak about global conflicts over water. Learn about the U.N. Millennium Goal of incorporating peace-building into water resource development. This event is co-sponsored by Molloy’s Office of Mission.

Eco-Twinning Lunch

April 21, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m., Anselma Room,

Kellenberg Hall. Help raise funds to support the mission of Dominican Sisters and Friars serving a farming community in Nigeria by purchasing a healthy soup and bread lunch.

Film-“Flow”

April 21, 10:40 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., Reception Room, Kellenberg Hall. Watch “Flow,” an informative documentary about the global water crisis. Organic popcorn will be served.

Keynote Speaker - Kelly Coleman, Executive Director, Save the Rain

April 22, 10:40 a.m. – 12 p.m., Hays Theatre, Wilbur Arts Center. Save the Rain is committed to ending the water crisis by teaching people in water deprived areas to catch, store, clean and use the rain as a sustainable water supply. Coleman’s presentation will discuss water harvesting efforts.

Long Island’s Drinking Water - Reception Room, Kellenberg Hall; Speaker: Stephen Jones, CEO, Suffolk County Water Authority

Learn about the source of Long Island’s drinking water. See how it is impacted by pollution, how it is treated and monitored, and understand the demands we put on it.

Help Us Clean Our Bays - Room 20, Kellenberg Hall; Speaker: Captain Don Harris, Operation SPLASH (Stop Pollution, Littering, and Save Harbors) Learn about the impact of various pollutants, the differences between storm drains and sewer systems, and how to help solve the pollution problem on Long Island.

Are We Loving Our Waterways to Death?

Multipurpose Room, Wilbur Arts Center

Speaker: Maureen Dolan-Murphy, Citizen’s Campaign for the Environment Learn about emerging threats to our waters, what’s being done to restore them, and what you can do to help.

Theatre Production – “H2-Zero” April 22, 2 p.m. – 3 p.m., Hays Theatre, Wilbur Arts Center.“H2-Zero” is a humorous play written, directed and performed by Molloy students on what might happen if the Earth ran out of water.
