Plantings and green space on Prospect Avenue in East Meadow were refreshed this weekend, thanks to the efforts of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce.
The small triangular patch just south of Hempstead Turnpike has been overseen by the Chamber since the early 90s, Ted Rosenthal, an East Meadow-based attorney told the Herald. Over the years, upkeep has been inconsistent, but about four years ago, just ahead of the Memorial Day parade, the East Meadow Fire Department aided in cleaning up the space.
“After (that) Memorial Day parade, the Chamber decided it was time to really do a job, and we gutted it,” Rosenthal recounted. “We got rid of everything that was there, we started from scratch, and what exists now is the result of the Chamber’s efforts to really make it look great. We maintain it now with the fire department’s help.”
Ahead of this year’s parade, the Chamber decided to refresh the space again. It enlisted the help of Mike Panagatos, a past president of the Chamber, who knows a lot about landscape design.
“We organized to plant flowers this past Saturday, and they are all in,” Rosenthal said. “We spent about two-and-a-half, three hours there, under Mike’s guidance as to how to do this and make sure it is done properly, since he had the knowledge. He went and bought everything and brought it all there, and we did our best to put it in the ground and it really looks wonderful, so we’re hoping for the parade, really, it’ll be blooming.”
The Chamber hopes the plants will last through November.
