Wounded Warrior Fundraiser sponsored by the Nassau County Firefighters Wounded Warriors Project on Oct. 9 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Savannah Lounge in East Meadow. Join the firefighters to raise money for our wounded troops. Over 30,000 troops have been wounded in recent conflicts. Every December, the NCFFWWP convoy's a lone of fire department vehicles to personally deliver the necessities of the wounded warriors. Join the firefighters for food, cash bar, a 50/50 raffle and prizes. All proceeds benefit the troops and their families.
Blood drive on Friday, Oct. 10 hosted by the East Meadow Post Office in conjunction with Long Island Blood Services. The mobile blood vehicle will be stationed in front of the East Meadow Post office from noon to 5:30 p.m. Postmaster Charles Knowles urges the community to give the gift of life by either stopping by the post office that day or by scheduling an appointment by calling the post office at 794-5246. For answers regarding blood donation eligibility, call L.I. Blood Services at (800) 688-0900.
Russian Concert The children's choir from the Holy Trinity Cloister of the Orenburg Region, Russia will be performing Russian folk music on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 369 Green Avenue, East Meadow. Fall festival and Craft Fair at Meadowbrook Elementary School, 214 Old Westbury Road, East Meadow on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The raindate is Sunday, Oct. 12. There is something for everyone. For more information, call Christine at (516) 939-2404.
From the Page to the Stage , a special performance by Motl Didner, associate director of the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene and Danielle Dorter, member of the Folksbiene Troupe on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. in the Nassau Cultural Center, 574 East Meadow Avenue, sponsored by the Long Island Workmen's Circle Branch 1075. Helping Hand fundraiser in loving memory of Ed Davis will be on Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Calvary Lutheran Church, Taylor Avenue & Busch, East Meadow. It is expected to be an evening of fun and laughter, including an Italian feast, raffles and a $1,000 grand prize. Ed Davis a much loved and respected private business owner, from the East Meadow Community has recently passed away. Members of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Boy Scout Troop 362, the East Meadow PTA and loving friends have banded together to run the Helping Hands Fundraiser. A local boy scout is asking for donations to help complete his eagle scout project to build a gazebo at Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve, 1600 Merrick Road, Merrick. Marilyn Bunshaft Memorial Concert Featuring The James Weidman Quartet James Weidman is one of the world's greatest sidemen. This time he is performing with Belden Bullock, Tony Jefferson, and Jay Hoggard. Weidman has played with musicians as diverse as Max Roach, Woody Herman, James Moody, and blues diva Dakotah Smith, among others. He has been the accompanist for the great Abby Lincoln, and a long time collaborator of T.K. Blue. Tony Jefferson, third place finalist in the Thelonious Monk Competition, plays with Marvin Stamm, Lonnie Smith, Cyrus Chestnut and others too numerous to mention. Jay Hoggard on vibraphone, was proclaimed "...the most dazzling new vibraphonist in jazz." by Robert Palmer in the New York Times. Belden Bullock on bass, has performed with the following prominent jazz artists: Roy Haynes, Lionel Hampton, Gloria Lynn, and Ted Curson. This concert is given in memory of Marilyn Bunshaft, the former Community Services representative whose knowledge, kindness, and forward thinking were invaluable assets to the East Meadow Public Library.
