Fourteen years ago, several residents of East Rockaway gathered to form the East Rockaway Education Foundation as a community organization. From this beginning, this independent, non-profit group has worked to provide financial and creative support to the East Rockaway public schools.
Our goals are to foster partnerships among our schools, community, businesses and industry. To date, we have raised and donated over $150,000 for programs and grants. Each year we continue our financial support through scholarships for students in the East Rockaway community. To date, $27,000 in scholarships was provided to recipients.
The foundation appreciates support from the community whether it is a Harlem Wizard game, Raffles for Rocks or a tip of the hat to deserving members of our community at a dinner dance. Our mission is to identify and mobilize available resources and use them to enhance the academic experience. Recent donations include funding for district-wide interactive media broadcasting servers located in all three schools. We also covered expenses for art display panels, library books including play-a-ways, grants for robotics and technology equipment. We have an open door and look to recruit new members on an on-going basis. Alumni members, parents, teachers and the overall community who is interested in the welfare of our children are encouraged to participate.
EREF meetings are held on the last Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in the East Rockaway High School School conference room. All are welcome to attend. For more information, call (516) 477-5564.
