Nearly one hundred members of East Rockaway High School’s Class of 1963 gathered at the Elks Lodge No. 1 in Lynbrook for a very special reunion. Chaired by alumna Mary Lou Perry, the gala event was filled with hugs, laughter, and of course, good music.
The weekend-long reunion included a Friday night cocktail party at Michael’s Porthole and a Saturday tour of their old alma mater, led by Athletic Director Dom Vulpis. Former students — and faculty, came from as far away as Arizona, New Mexico, North Carolina, Florida and New Hampshire.
“It was beautiful,” said Perry. “Everything was great. We talked about all the fun we had in high school.” She said that they honored their teachers at the dinner. “We hope to get together in smaller groups, and maybe a bigger reunion in five years.”
A homecoming
“When I left East Rockaway in 1963, it was a lovely little village in which to grow up. It was full of friendly, caring people and it warmed my heart to see that in this way my old hometown remains very much the same. I like the changes by the waterfront district, which make the area about the Inlet even more welcoming than it was in the old days.
