On Sunday March 6, the East Rockaway Middle School Robotics team attended the Long Island finals at Longwood High School in Suffolk County. After a long day of three robot programming challenges and three presentations to the judges, the East Rockaway “POP ROCKS” walked away with another trophy. This year the team finished 2nd in Team Work.
The competition started out with 88 teams on Long Island but at the end of the finals, only 24 trophies were handed out. Hugh Howard and Nick Cimorelli coach the team.
“Little old East Rockaway continues to impress every year at the Robotics competition,” said Cimorelli. Howard added “we have seen real growth in the team members’ programming and logic skills.”
Robotics is part of the seventh grade technology curriculum this year and a high school robotics elective is part of a revised Electronics/Robotics course being offered for the 2011-12 school year.
The members who made it to the finals are James Tierney, Alex Sharkey, Peter Liotta, Dylan Temple, Declan Louw, and Peter Wilson.
