Fighting back tears and with a firm grip on the Nassau County Class A boys’ basketball championship plaque after second-seeded Elmont’s exhilarating 55-51 double overtime victory over No. 1 South Side last Saturday night before a crowd of more than 3,000 at LIU Post, Travis Robinson-Morgan was quick to praise counterpart Alex Sorensen.

“He’s one of the best players on Long Island and I had to guard him for the last 20 minutes,” Robinson-Morgan said of Sorensen, a three-time All-County selection who dazzled in his high school finale with a game-high 22 points. “It was tough, but I did what I had to do,” he added. “It was a heck of a battle. Both teams battled hard all night.”

Robinson-Morgan, a senior who had five points in the second overtime and finished with 12, did his best to hold Sorensen in check after he hit for all 10 Cyclones’ points in the third quarter, including a 3-for-3 performance from behind the arc. Sorensen opened a dramatic fourth with another trey to put South Side (18-5) ahead 35-34, triggering a dramatic final eight minutes of regulation and eight frantic minutes of OT.

Baskets by seniors Jalen Burgess (20 points) and Yasir Lawrence gave Elmont (20-3) a 38-35 lead, but senior Paul Lonergan and Sorensen sandwiched hoops around a free throw by sophomore KC Ndefo to even the score at 39 with 2:52 left in regulation.
