Ward Melville's offensive burst in the second half proved to be too much for East Meadow in the Long Island Championship game during a steady rain storm at Adelphi on Wednesday night.
The scoreboard at the end of the game, which reflected a 6-0 loss for East Meadow, did not tell the whole story. The Lady Jets opened the game with a defensive stand, and were able to keep the game scoreless at halftime. But Ward Melville, the Suffolk Class A champions who lost only one game all season, broke through with a penalty shot goal less than three minutes into the second half, and did not look back.
East Meadow won its first ever Nassau County Class A Field Hockey Championship on Sunday when it upset top-seeded Massapequa 2-1 in overtime.
